Fish Farm
Safety and
Aquaculture
V. Fish Culture
(Aquaculture)
Definition: Growing fish in controlled
environments.
Methods of Aquaculture:
1. Pond Culture – for Bangus, Tilapia,
Shrimps
2. Pen and Cage Culture – open water
enclosures
3. Integrated Farming – with
crops/livestock
4. RAS – indoor water-saving system
Phases of Fish Culture
1. Fish Cultivation – raising to market size
Extensive - Low cost, low input, natural feeding.
Semi-intensive - Moderate cost, uses supplemental
feeds/fertilizers.
Intensive systems - High input, artificial feeding, high
yield.
2. Fish Propagation – breeding methods
- Natural -Spawning in natural settings.
Semi-natural - Uses hormones to induce spawning
Artificial- Full hormonal control outside normal cycles
3. Fish Conservation – protect populations
- Fish sanctuary: no-fishing zones
Fish Conservation
Protecting fish populations and habitats.
Importance:
Maintains ecosystem balance.
Sustains livelihood and food supply.
Supports scientific research and
biodiversity.
Fish Sanctuary: No-fishing zones that
allow fish populations to recover
VI. Endangered Fish
Species (Philippines)
• Ludong (Cagayan River)
• Lindog, Sirang (Lake Lanao)
• Tawilis, Bia (Taal Lake)
• Darapa (Lingayen Gulf)
• Coscosleng (Ilocos Norte)
• Bulokot (Lake Manguao, Palawan)
VIII. Key Laws – RA 10654
(amending RA 8550)
Objective: Stop illegal, unreported, unregulated
fishing.
Key Sections:
Sec 2 – Covers all PH waters & industries
Sec 93 – Bans fine mesh nets
Sec 94 – No fishing in overexploited areas
Sec 105 – Illegal fish import/export
Sec 107 – Pollution fines & jail time
Sec 112 – Good Aquaculture Practices required
I. Safety in Fish Farming
Importance of Safety Measures:
- Prevents harm to workers and
property.
- Promotes workers' well-being.
- Preserves the environment.
Legal Basis: RA 11058 – Ensures
workers' safety and health.
II. Personal Protective
Equipment (PPE)
PPE protects workers from
injury, chemicals, and
weather.
Examples:
- Gloves, Jackets, Sunglasses,
Goggles, Sunscreen
- Raincoat, Long pants
III. Hazards in Fish Farming
1. Biological: parasites, fungal
infections
2. Physical: noise, injuries, animal bites
3. Environmental: pesticides, chemicals
4. Psychosocial: stress, job insecurity
5. Ergonomic: posture issues, long work
hours
IV. Safety Measures
- Identify hazards
- Use PPE and emergency equipment
- Practice first aid
- Secure chemicals
- Monitor weather before applying
chemicals
- Use tools properly
- Maintain emergency contacts
- Inventory hazardous substances
