Resilience -
• What is it?
• It is the process of negotiating, managing and
adapting to significant sources of stress or trauma
(Windle, Bennett & Noyes, 2011).
• Ability to ‘bounce back’ from adversities and
stressful events
• Masten (2011) presents resilience as the capacity
of a dynamic system to withstand or recover from
significant challenges that threaten its stability,
viability, or development.
• What is the meaning of a dynamic system here?

• The Resilience Scale for Adults (RSA) is
one of the highest rated resilience scales
used in research. It is a 33-item self-
report scale for measuring protective
resilience factors among adults (see
Appendix A). There are six factors in the
RSA: perception-of-self, planned future,
social competence, structured style,
family cohesion, and social resources.
• Revised Ego Resilience Scale
• ER89-R) by Alessandri et al. (2008) was
administered to evaluate trait
psychological resilience (see Appendix
B). This scale is comprised of 10 items,
each answered according to a 4-point
Likert scale, ranging from 1 = does not
apply at all to 4 = applies very strongly.

They will have 1 minute for this selection process (to give time for

• The 5-item RAT (Mednick, 1962) is a measure of associative processing
in creative problem-solving. Individuals are given three semantically
unrelated words, then asked to produce a fourth word which combines
Associates with each of the three to create new words (e.g. words given: sauce,
crab, pine; solution: apple- which produces applesauce, crabapple, and

items.
Creative • The 28-item CBI (Dollinger, 2011) is a self-report questionnaire
measuring the degree to which individuals engage in activities related
