TOPIC
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN
CONVENTIONAL LOOM & MODERN LOOM
TOPIC
Loom:
Conventional loom
Loom:
 Loom is a mechanical device which interweaves warp and
weft yarns into fabric, that’s fabrics are suitable for use as
dress or industrial uses.
Classification of loom
Loom can be classified into two classes:
1.Conventional loom
2.modern loom
Conventional loom
Modern loom
Hand loom
 A hand loom is a loom that is manually operated, unlike
motorized or electrically powered looms. It is an apparatus on
which weavers create fabric by interlacing the warp and weft
threads.
 The handloom was invented about 2,000 years ago and was
brought to England by the Romans.
Advantages and disadvantages of hand loom
 Advantages:
 Hand loom is more economical.
 Easy to operate.
 Suitable for low scale production type industry.
 Separate parts are available in market.
 Disadvantages:
 Causes more noise in the work field.
 Shuttle cause abrasion on warp yarn which increase wastage
percentage.
 Warp break increases for shuttle.
 Lower production rate then shuttle less loom.
Rapier Loom (Modern)
RAPIER LOOM
Rapier loom is a shuttleless weaving loom in which the
filling yarn is carried through the shed of warp yarns to the
other side of the loom by finger like carriers called rapiers.
RAPIER
It is the main part of rapier loom
It is used insted of shuttle
Shattle
Exit Gripper
Enter Gripper
Picking Mechanism
 The rapier head on creel side
picks up yarn from designated
cone and is carried towards
centre of warp shed by the rod.
 Simultaneously the matching
rapier head from opposite side
moves in, as shown in the
central diagram.
 The picking cycle is completed
when both rapiers retreat to
their original position.
Single Rapier Double Rapier
Air Jet Loom
What is air jet loom
 Air jet weaving loom is that, at which jet of air is used to propel
the weft yarn through the shed at a speed of up to 600 ppm.
Conventional loom and modern loom
Advantage and Disadvantage
 Advantage
o Multicolor weft inserting
o Automatic pick repairing
o Heavier yarns are suitable for air jet looms
 Disadvantage
o Power consumption dew to compressed air
o Lighter fabrics are very difficult to control through shed
o Too heavy yarns also can't be carried across the loom by air jet
Weaving system
 The air jet weaving machine are supplied with compressed air
maintained from central source
 The preparation of the air before its distribution of the air to the individual
weaving machine through a valve system
• Filtering
• Compressing
• Cooling
• Drying
• Air tank
Water Jet Loom
Water Jet Loom
 A water Jet is the machine for weaving cloth (loom) which use a Jet of Water to insert the
weft (crosswise threads) into the warp (length wise threads) The force of air water
carriers the yarn from one side to the other.
Conventional loom and modern loom
Advantage
 High Efficiency
 Low Drag and Shallow Draught
 Smooth and Quiet
 Total Safety
The water jet picking system of
 The weft insertion on a water jet weaving machine in divided into
three phases .
a. Acceleration of the water in the pump prior to its injection into the
nozzle.
b. Jet outlet from the nozzle
c. Flow in the free environment different form
o Compact
o Split
o atomized
Projectile Loom
Projectile Loom
 It is sometimes called missile loom as the picking action is
done by a series of small bullet like projectiles which hold the
weft yarn and carry it through the shed and then return empty.
Method
The method of moving the reed and the projectile
track differs from a conventional automatic
loom mainly in two respects.
The method of insertion of weft into the warp shed
The method of moving the reed and the projectile
track
Advantages of Projectile Loom
Two or three cloths can be woven simultaneously.
 It is possible to achieve weaving performances with
breakage rate per square meter of cloth. 50% of the
number of breaks that would occur on a conventional
loom
Since the projectile is passing through guides there is no
reed to projectile or projectile to yarn contact.
Onventional vs Modern loom
Conventional loom
 Low running speed.
 Comparatively lower production capacity.
 Simple design can be produced.
 Driven manually.
 Initial investment is comparatively lower.
 Shedding, picking & beating up is done automatically.
 Shuttle loom.
 Higher warp shed need.
 Less number of design variety can be produced.
 Safety system is not properly improved.
Modern Loom
 High running speed.
 Higher production capacity.
 Complex design can be produced.
 Driven by electric power.
 Initial investment is high.
 Shedding, picking & beating up is done automatically.
 Shuttle less loom.
 Lower warp shed needed.
 More number of design variety can be produced.
 Safety system is improved.
