The human digestive system begins with ingestion of food through the mouth. The teeth grind the food into smaller pieces as saliva moistens it. The tongue then pushes the food into the pharynx. The pharynx transports the food into the esophagus, which carries the food into the stomach. The stomach stores and breaks down food using acids and enzymes. Nutrients are then absorbed through the small intestine before waste is passed into the large intestine, rectum, and out of the body.
