The coastline paradox
Is the counterintuitive observation that the coastline of a
landmass does not have a well-defined length.
This results from the fractal-like properties of coastlines,
i.e. the fact that a coastline typically has a fractal
dimension (which in fact makes the notion of length
inapplicable).
The first recorded observation of this phenomenon was
by Lewis Fry Richardson[1] and it was expanded by
Benoit Mandelbrot.[2]
“If you can't explain it simply, you
don't understand it well enough.”

Core UI & UX Example Questions
Based on the 3 key facets of UX we can start to ask some
core questions
Perception
• What about the user experience and user
interface of your current solution do you like?
• What about the user experience and user
interface of your current solution do you
dislike?
• What do you want a consumer to think after
they see a particular visit?
• To what extent are you satisfied with the user
experience?
Persona Groups
• What Persona Groups typically exist?
• Based on each Persona Group created
• Who may receive the change differently?
• Describe reasons why users should use
SharePoint homepage?
• What content do users need to access most
often?
• What content should be returned in a
search? Is there any specific pieces of
content that should be very easily find-able?
• Describe what a user needs to be able to
do/see on a departmental site?
• Describe what a user needs to be able to
do/see on a project site?
• Describe what a user will need to request
help to complete? (i.e. create a site, change
permissions, etc.)
Personas Micro and Macro Granularity
• Based on each Persona Group created
• Who uses the customizations?
• What customizations currently exist?
• What integrations should exist?
Business Goals & Questions Specific to the
User Interface
• What are the users goals for each type of site?
• What key features do you want visitors to notice?
• What is the main purpose of the content delivery?
• Are you presenting controlled information or
providing information that is open to everyone?
• What customizations are requested regularly?
• What use cases have we identified?
• Discuss top menu and site menu.
• Describe the steps a user takes to navigate to a
particular location/file.
Branding and Marketing Goals
• What page layouts currently exist?
• What do you like about the current
branding?
• To what extent do you foresee changing the
current look and feel?
• What opportunities for branding
improvement are there?
• How does SharePoint fit into overall
marketing and branding picture?
• Describe the current state of branding,
including colors, fonts, images, etc.
• Envision branding changes that may be
required in the future.
Red Flags in Stakeholder
Assumptions
• Wide age ranges
• Wide skill sets or technical backgrounds
• Emotional language is unknown or very general
• Brand is unknown
• Unknown technology or screen sizes

Summary
• UX multidisciplinary. It is not just ( X ) or ( Y ) or ( Z )
• While the business understands it’s value and necessity… They have no idea
how UX works.
• A UX Process has inertia if done correctly.
• Some Facets of UX are easily quantifiable… make sure to incorporate these.
• It’s essential that you know how to explain you or your team’s process while
also being able to quantify it’s value.
Thanks
