SIRPA was founded in 2010 by Georgie Oldfield MCSP when she decided that raising the profile of the pioneering SIRPA approach she had developed would be easier by training other health professionals to integrate this approach with their work with their own clients. The emphasis of the SIRPA approach is on recovery from chronic pain, rather than management, based on the understanding that the pain is due to learned nerve pain pathways that can be changed, rather than due to any physical abnormality.
