WHAT IS PUBLIC DNS?
2
Essential component of nearly all
communication on the Internet
The first link in the
DNS lookup chain
ISP
Internet Service
Providers
Enterprises End Users
Provides the
intelligent routing for
Internet navigation
User types URL
into a browser
PUBLIC
RECURSIVE DNS
RESOLVERThe URL is sent to the public
recursive DNS resolver
ROOT SERVERS
Resolver checks with the root server
to find where to go to get the IP
addresses for URLs that end in .COM
AUTHORITATIVE SERVERS
This server knows the IP address for
the full domain and returns the answer
to the recursive DNS resolver

Browser goes to
www.verisign.com7

The public recursive DNS
resolver returns actual address,
www.verisign.com

TLD NAME SERVERS
The TLD name server answers with the
IP address of the authoritative server
for that domain

Editor's Notes

  • #3: INTENT: Give the audience (enterprise IT, ISP product managers, ISP strategy) a high-level understanding of where Recursive DNS fits in the overall DNS ecosystem. This sets the stage for the next slide. The user types “www.bestdomainnameever.com” into browser. Browser sends query to the Recursive resolver (ISP). Recursive knows which other servers it needs to ask in order to answer query “What is the IP address of www.bestdomainnameever.com?” Recursive talks to the Root, asks for information about .com Root knows DNS information about TLDs TLD Name Server stores the information for Second Level Domains (bestdomainnameever) under the TLD. TLD Name Server answers with IP address for tne Domain’s Name Server Recursive then sends the query to the Domain’s Name Server Name Server knows the IP address for the full domain (www.bestdomainnameever.com) Returns answer to Recursive server Recursive tells the browser the IP address and the browser retrieves content for user.
  • #4: INTENT: These are the four positions that the product is built upon. Performance is not mentioned here because, although the service performs at a commensurate level to the competition, it doesn’t matter how well it performs if it isn’t stable and secure (hence available). Copy can be edited down to key words/elements.
