HOW TO HELP PROTECT
YOURSELF FROM SEXUAL
ASSAULT
And what to do if it happens to you
SOMEWHERE IN AMERICA SOMEONE IS
RAPED EVERY TWO MINUTES.
In a perfect world, education about rape would center around teaching
individuals NOT to do it, rather than teaching them ways to help avoid
it from happening. And while we never think it is going to happen to us,
rape happens to EVERYONE, regardless of age, sex, beauty, race, or
religion. The unfortunate truth is that rape can happen to anyone,
anywhere, and at any time. Rape does not discriminate.
And while there is no absolute method for ensuring It will never
happen to us, we can take measures to avoid situations that can leave
us vulnerable to becoming a victims of rape.
AVOID SITUATIONS THAT RENDER YOU
VULNERABLE
• Avoid parking lots and garages at night.
• Always walk in groups or pairs at night when possible.
• If you must walk alone at night, walk with confidence, have keys
ready, be alert, refrain from activities that distract you from your
surroundings, such as wearing headphones, texting, or browsing
social media.
DRINK RESPONSIBLY
• Always have your drink with you, never leave it unattended. If you do
happen to abandon your drink for any reason, the safest thing to do is
toss it.
• Drinking too much can alter your judgement, interfere with your
ability to asses a situation properly, and your hinder your ability to
fight off an attacker.
• Keep an eye on friends who may have had too much to drink.
OTHER THINGS TO REMEMBER…
• Always trust your instincts. If something feels off, that
means it usually is. Don’t just assume you’re being
paranoid.
• Don’t’ be afraid to get involved if you notice something
suspicious.
IF YOU SUSPECT YOU ARE BEING FOLLOWED
OR ARE ABOUT TO BE ATTACKED
Make Some Noise – Call the police, talk to yourself - speak loudly. Draw
attention to yourself. Yell for help or scream fire.
Look – Always make eye contact. An assailant will be less likely to attack
if he (or she) knows you will be able to clearly identify him later.
Change Course – Find a the nearest public place to go into or a nearby
house and knock on the door.
IN THE UNFORTUNATE EVENT OF AN ATTACK,
REMEMBER TO S.I.N.G.
•S - Solar Plexus: This is the area below the rib cage just above the abdomen. Using your elbow,
jabbing someone in this area will knock the wind out of them, potentially giving you time to get away.
•I – Instep: Using your heel, stomp as hard as you can on the top part your assailants foot. This move
especially works good if you happen to be wearing shoes with heels.
•N – Nose: Using the bottom part of you palm in an upward motion does well to fend off an attacker.
Not only can you break their nose, but this move also causes eyes to water, making it more difficult to
see.
•G – Groin: Striking your attacker in this area hurts no matter how you do it.
AND REMEMBER…It is NOT YOUR fault!
Not even if…
you were wearing a short shirt
you were walking home alone late at night
you let him drive you home
you had too much to drink
you used to date
you were flirting with him at a party
You said yes and then changed your mind
you didn’t say no
you didn’t fight back
IF YOU OR SOMEONE YOU KNOW BECOMES
A VICTIM OF RAPE.
