Stem cells in the treatment of Infertility
What is infertility?
Infertility refers to biological inability of a person to conceive or a
female who is not able to carry the pregnancy.
In general, infertility refers to a couple that has failed to conceive
after 12 months of regular sexual intercourse without the use
of contraception.
Studies indicate that slightly over half of all cases of infertility are a
result of female conditions, while the rest are caused by either
sperm disorders or unidentified factors.

According to The Mayo Clinic, USA:
• About 20% of cases of infertility are due to a problem in the man.
• About 40% to 50% of cases of infertility are due to a problem in
the woman.
• About 30% to 40% of cases of infertility are due to problems in
both the man and the woman.
According to the Department of Health and Human Services, USA,
approximately 10% to 15% of couples in the USA are infertile. Many
cases of apparent infertility are treatable. Infertility may have a single
cause in one of the partners, or it could be the result of a
combination of factors.

Once a couple diagnosed with infertility, the investigation for
possible treatments get started. In recent years, various
advancements have been made in assisted reproduction treatment
and now more than 80% of couples experiencing infertility issues
can conceive a child .
Stem cells are considered as new therapeutic agents for the
treatment of infertility due to their widely available sources and
high differentiation potential. The article below focuses on various
aspects of stem cells usage for the treatment of infertility.

Use of stem cells in Infertility:
Since 2004, the research on the usage of stem cells for the treatment
of infertility has been surrounded by hype.
As per the conventional theory, the eggs woman carries since her
birth are the one which are involved in the reproduction process
however some scientists claim that by using stem cells these eggs can
be created in lab and prove as a blessing for infertile women’s, such
as those who entered the menopause stage. However the
researchers at the Department of Chemistry and Molecular Biology at
the University of Gothenburg tried to create egg cells but not
succeeded. This creates uncertainty about the use of stem cells for
the creation of new egg cells.

Further, together with Outi Hovatta's research group at
Karolinska Institute and Jan-Åke Gustafsson's research team at
the University Houston in the United States, experiments were
carried out on mice, which shows that the only eggs, female mice
have are the ones which they carries since birth. This experiment
shows that use of stem cells in infertility is unrealistic but also
clinics and clinicians should focus on using the eggs the women
have had since birth in treating infertility.

Till now, one of the best known techniques for treating infertility
includes In vitro fertilization (IVF). It is a process which involves
removing an egg from a woman's ovaries and fertilizing it with
sperm in a lab. The egg once fertilized referred to as an embryo, is
implanted to a woman's womb, to grow and develop into a
pregnancy.

A leading expert in the field, Cambridge University's Professor
Roger Pederson, said the latest stem cell research would not b
e possible without IVF. Embryos used in the studies were left
over from IVF treatment and donated by consenting couples.
"This is all a legacy of the 25 years of IVF," he said.

It is predicted that in future everybody who is infertile can be
helped, by using artificially created sperms and eggs. However,
there is a huge potential in interaction of stem cell technology with
the reproductive functions and the infertility treatment. Already,
experiments on mice have indicated it is possible to turn stem cells
- the body's unprogrammed 'master' cells - into sperm or eggs.
However clinical trials are under process for human treatment .As
per the researchers, In the future, they will be able to take the cell
s and create the equivalent sperms and egg cells but it is a matter
of time as a lot of work need to be done to show the efficiency and
safety of these procedures.
