A computer network connects computing devices through communication channels to facilitate sharing of resources and information among users. Networks allow for email, file sharing, printer sharing, and easier access to information. There are several types of networks including local area networks (LANs), wide area networks (WANs), and metropolitan area networks (MANs). LANs connect devices within a small area like a building while WANs connect LANs across larger areas like cities and countries. Devices on a network can be categorized as servers that provide shared resources or workstations that are used by humans. LANs are implemented using cables or wireless connections while WANs connect across public networks.

It is generally limited to a geographic area such as a writing lab, school, or building. • Computers connected to a network are broadly categorized as servers or workstations. • Servers are generally not used by humans directly. LAN Implementation • Multiple ways are their for implementation. • Example twisted pair cables and a wireless Wi-Fi. • One end of the twisted pair cable is plugged into switches using ‘RJ-45 connectors’ whereas the other end is plugged to a computer or in another network. Wide Area Network • Wide Area Network is a computer network that covers relatively larger geographical area such as a state, province or country. • WAN is made up of two or more Local Area Networks (LANs) that are interconnected with each other, thus users and computers in one location can communicate with users and computers in other locations. Metropolitan Area Network • MAN is a network that connects two or more computers, communicating devices or networks in a single network that has geographic area larger than that covered by even a large LAN. • But smaller than the region covered by a WAN. • MANs are mostly built for cities or towns to provide a high data connection and usually owned by a single large organization.
