Lecture 20
Computer Network
• A computer network is a group of computer
systems and other computing hardware
devices.
• They are linked together through
communication channels to facilitate
communication and resource-sharing among a
wide range of users.

Networks Is Used To
• Facilitate communication via email, video
conferencing, instant messaging, etc.
• Enable multiple users to share a single
hardware device like a printer or scanner.
• Enable file sharing across the network.
• Allow for the sharing of software.
• Make information easier to access and
maintain among network users.

Networking Technologies
• Local Area Network (LAN)
• Wide Area Network (WAN)
• Metropolitan Area Network (MAN)

Local Area Network (LAN)
• A Local Area Network (LAN) is a network that
is restricted to smaller physical areas.
Example:-
local office, school, or house.
• On a ‘Local Area Network’ data transfer
speeds are higher than WAN and MAN.

Local Area Network (LAN)
• A Local Area Network (LAN) is a network that
is restricted to small area. It is generally
limited to a geographic area such as a writing
lab, school, or building.
• Computers connected to a network are
broadly categorized as servers or
workstations.
• Servers are generally not used by humans
directly.
Copyrights By Tanveer Malik
LAN Implementation
• Multiple ways are their for implementation.
• Example twisted pair cables and a wireless
Wi-Fi.
• One end of the twisted pair cable is plugged
into switches using ‘RJ-45 connectors’
whereas the other end is plugged to a
computer or in another network.

Wide Area Network
• Wide Area Network is a computer network
that covers relatively larger geographical area
such as a state, province or country.
• WAN is made up of two or more Local Area
Networks (LANs) that are interconnected with
each other, thus users and computers in one
location can communicate with users and
computers in other locations.
Copyrights By Tanveer Malik
Wide Area Network
• In WAN Computers are connected through
public networks, such as the telephone
systems, fiber-optic cables, and satellite links.
• WANs are mostly private and are build for a
particular organization by ‘Internet Service
Providers (ISPs)

Wide Area Network
• The Internet may be considered a WAN.
List of WAN types:
- ATM
- DSL
- Leased Lines
- Cable modem

Metropolitan Area Network
• MAN is a network that connects two or more
computers, communicating devices or networks
in a single network that has geographic area
larger than that covered by even a large LAN.
• But smaller than the region covered by a WAN.
• MANs are mostly built for cities or towns to
provide a high data connection and usually
owned by a single large organization.
