Team 2
T: The epic intro
Thisis our visionof changingTartuintoa more sustainable andgreatcity. Here are some of the
challengesTartuhasto face in the future. While some of these are easiertosolve thanothers,we
decidedtofocuson the mostchallengingones. Here are the mostimportantones.
S: Making vocational schoolsmore attractive
We focuson the problemof vocational schoolsbecauseTartuhasa highdemandof employee, such
as grocerystore workersetc.,butnotenoughpeople are interestedinthose jobs.
What do vocational schoolsoffer?
The vocational schoolsoffertuitioninspecial skillsneededforaparticularjob. The vocational
schoolsare veryflexible, andhave the upsideof beingable tobe accessedevenif youare working. If
youhave job experience, youalsogeta differentcurriculum, since youalreadyhave the knowledge.
Whydon’t people go to vocational schools?
Consideringthereare 5 vocational schoolsinTartu,itshouldn’tbe a problemgettingintothem.
However, the reasonforpeople notgoingtovocational schoolsisbecause inourtime andage,
people thinkthatitisnecessarythattheygo to university. Alsothe factthatit isextremelyeasyto
getintothe university,makesthe vocationalschoolssecondrate education.
How do we make vocational schoolsbetter?
We couldpushstoresor corporationstosignagreementswiththe vocational schoolstoofferjobsto
the graduates.Withthe guarantee of gettinga jobaftergraduationitwouldmake the education
much more valuable. The mainproblembeingthe low statusof the educationandoccupationthey
leadto meansthatthismindset iswhatneedstobe changedfirstof all.
T: MakingTartu more popular
What can Tartu offer?
Tartu offersmanyhistorical sites, suchasthe firstuniversityinthe Balticregion, the Universityof
Tartu. Tartu is alsofilledwithculture.Tartuoffersmanyattractions, suchasthe AHHAA Science
Centre,the numerousstatues,the architecture,andmultiplemuseums,manyrestaurants,aswell as
amazingpeople.
Whyaren’t there more tourists?
Estoniaitself isasmall country,the inaccessibilitythatthe cityhas,witha small airport,notmany
trainlines,resultsinthe lackof huge numbersof tourists.
How can we make Tartu more popular?
More attractions…Tartu shouldgetmore involvedwithdifferenttravel companies,other
international andnational companieswithinthe tourismsector.Therebythe citywill getmore
renowned.Theyshouldalsogetmore sistercities,sothatthe internationalco-operationwill
increase.The advertisementbudgetshouldalsoincrease,spreadingthe wordonseveral different
medias.
R: Whyaren’t more foreignstudentsstudyinghere?
AlthoughTartuis the secondlargestcityinEstonia,Estoniaitself isn’tthatlarge,therefore notmany
people knowaboutTartu. The universityitself isinthe top500 universitiesof the world, however,
people usuallytrytoget intothe top 100 universitiesand don’tevenlookasfaras 500…
Pros:
Free forcitizens
Many programs to choose from
There are topendscientificfacilitiesinplace already.
The students’ researchisfundedbythe school
Studentlife isextremelyfunsince Tartuiscomprisedof around25% students,and50% of Tartu is
belowthe age of 35
Cons
Notverypopular
Most coursesare taughtonlyin Estonian
The coursesare mostlytheoretical,meaningnotasmuch fieldwork.
How do we get more foreignstudentsto study here?
We can do thisbymakingTartu and the universityitself more popularinthe world. We can dothisby
for instance, makingthe tuitionfee cheaperorfor free forforeignstudents. Tomake the university
more accessible,we canhire more foreignteachersthatofferthe coursesinadifferentlanguage,
one otherthan Estonian Alsogettingthe universitymore involvedintoexchangeprogramssuchas
Erasmus.Therebythey’ll startspreadingthe wordandthe universitywill be more renowned and
sooneror laterrank higheronthe listsof the bestuniversities. The facilitiescanbe usedtodo some
majorprojects,bringingPRto the university. If especiallyco-operatingwithotherforeign
universities, the Universityof Tartuwill be more renownedthatway. We couldadvertise the
university,bothnationallyandinternationally.Havingthe internettoadvertise these things,we
couldattract studentsfromall overthe world.
S: Conclusion
Tartu is alreadya verysustainablecity, butwe thinkthatitcan be evenmore sustainable. Therefore,
we focusedonthese challengestomake itjustthat. We askedourselves questionsthatwouldinturn
helpusfindsolutions.Inconclusion,byfindingtangible solutionsforthe challengesathand,we are
alsogettingsolutions forotherchallenges.
