Atoms and molecules

The mole concept provides a way to quantify matter at the molecular level. It defines one mole as the amount of a substance that contains as many elementary entities (atoms, molecules, ions or other particles) as there are atoms in exactly 12 grams of carbon-12. This allows chemists to convert between the microscopic scale of atoms and molecules and the macroscopic scale of mass that can be easily measured in the laboratory.
