Introduction to: Aperture, Depth of Field & Shutter Speed
WHAT IS APERTURE?
• The aperture is the size of the lens opening
• It controls the amount of light that is let in:
• A larger aperture lets in more light
• A smaller aperture lets in less light
APERTURE
• The smaller the f/number, the larger the opening
• The larger the f/number, the smaller the opening
f = Sign for aperture
The F word!
IMPORTANCE OF APERTURE
How can it change what your picture looks like?
A larger aperture (lower f/number) will have your
subject in focus, and everything in front of and
behind it blurry.
A smaller aperture (higher f/number) will have your
subject in focus and everything in front of and behind
it quite focused as well.
Also known as Depth of Field
DEPTH OF FIELD
Large aperture = Shallow depth of Field Small aperture = Large depth of Field
• Large depth of field = much of the
image is sharp and in focus.
• Shallow depth of field = only a small
part of the image is sharp and in
focus.
There are three things which can change
the depth of field:
1. The aperture
2. The focal length of the lens used
3. How near the subject focussed on is to
the camera
SHUTTER SPEED
• It's how long the sensor/film in the camera is exposed to light
• Shutter Speeds:
½ ¼ 1/8 1/15 1/30 1/60 1/125
• This depends on how much light there is
• If the shutter is open too long, the picture will be too bright, and if it's not
open long enough, the scene will be too dark
Also known as Exposure
EXPOSURE
Exposure
= Total amount of light which hits the film
This is controlled by both the aperture & shutter speed
REVIEW
What have we learnt?
• Aperture use = f sign
• Depth of field = focus of the image
• Use of shutter speed = fractions
• Exposure = total amount of light
They all connect!
