Name Of Subject : Computer Network
INTRODUCTION
• A computer network is a group of two or
more computers connected to each electronically. This
means that the computers can "talk" to each other and
that every computer in the network can send information
to the others.
• Heterogeneous systems need to talk to each other
• The client-server model involves requests and replies.
Primary objective of Computer Networks:
– Transfer data from machine A to machine B
– Facilitate access to remote information
– Facilitate sharing of data
– Facilitates person to person communication
– Facilitate Interactive Entertainment
– Not every machine is connected to every other machine
• Establish connection between a pair of machines
– Transfer data
• Enable machines of different speeds to
communicate with each other
•Business Applications
•Home Applications
•Mobile Users
•Social Issues
• In peer-to-peer system there are no fixed clients and
servers.
• Personal Area Network
• Local Area Networks
• Metropolitan Area Networks
• Wide Area Networks
• Wireless Networks
• Home Networks
• Internetworks
• Classification of interconnected processors by scale.
• Two broadcast networks
• (a) Bus
• (b) Ring
The interprocessor distance is 10 meters to 1 kilometer
and the processors are located in a room or a building or a
campus.
• The interprocessor distance is 10 kilometers and the
processors are located in a city.
• A metropolitan area network based on cable TV.
• The interprocessor distance is from 100 kilometers to
1000 kilometers and the processors are located in a
country or a continent.
• Relation between hosts on LANs and the subnet.
• The interprocessor distance is 10,000
kilometers and a popular example is
the INTERNET.
• Categories of wireless networks:
• System interconnection
• Wireless LANs
• Wireless WANs
• (a) Bluetooth configuration
• (b) Wireless LAN
• Computers (desktop PC, PDA, shared peripherals
• Entertainment (TV, DVD, VCR, camera, stereo,
MP3)
• Telecomm (telephone, cell phone, intercom, fax)
• Appliances (microwave, fridge, clock, furnace,
airco)
• Telemetry (utility meter, burglar alarm, babycam).
• The OSI Reference Model
• The TCP/IP Reference Model
• A Comparison of OSI and TCP/IP
• A Critique of the OSI Model and Protocols
• A Critique of the TCP/IP Reference Model
The OSI
reference
model.
• The TCP/IP reference model.
• Protocols and networks in the TCP/IP model initially.
• Concepts central to the OSI
model
• Services
• Interfaces
• Protocols
• Why OSI did not take over the
world
• Bad timing
• Bad technology
• Bad implementations
• Bad politics
• Problems:
• Service, interface, and protocol not distinguished
• Not a general model
• Host-to-network “layer” not really a layer
• No mention of physical and data link layers
• Minor protocols deeply entrenched, hard to
replace
• The hybrid reference model to be used in this book.
• Layers, protocols, and interfaces.
• Addressing
• Error Control
• Flow Control
• Multiplexing
• Routing
• Six different types of service.
• The Internet
• Connection-Oriented Networks:
X.25, Frame Relay, and ATM
• Ethernet
• Wireless LANs: 802:11

• (b) Baran’s proposed distributed switching system.
• Traditional applications (1970 – 1990)
• E-mail
• News
• Remote login
• File transfer
• Overview of the Internet.
• Architecture of the original Ethernet.
• (a) Wireless networking with a base station.
• (b) Ad hoc networking.
• The range of a single radio may not cover the entire
system.
• A multicell 802.11 network.
The 802 working groups. The important ones are
marked with *. The ones marked with  are
hibernating. The one marked with † gave up.
