The Indian Navy is the 7th largest navy in the world, with over 280 ships, 3700 aircraft, and 335,000 active sailors. Navy Day is celebrated on December 4th in remembrance of a successful attack on the port of Karachi in 1971. The Indian Navy was established by Britain while India was a colony and now operates over 180 vessels including an aircraft carrier. The Chief of Naval Staff is the highest ranking officer, currently Admiral Sunil Lanba. The navy is headquartered in Mumbai, Visakhapatnam, and Kochi and participates in conflicts with Pakistan and operates various weapons systems including missiles.
