INTRODUCTION Agricultural education is an important tool in ensuring increased agricultural productivity, sustainability, environmental and ecological security, profitability, job security and equity. In India, Randhawa Committee (1992) recommended the Rural Agriculture Work Experience (RAWE) Programme for imparting quality, practical and productive oriented education for the agriculture degree programme. Based on these recommendations RAWE programme was included in the curricula of agriculture graduate degree programme at Mata Gujri College , Fatehgarh Sahib , Punjab (India)
- 4. OBJECTIVES To gain knowledge and experience on the operational aspects of agricultural technology being used by the farmers; To develop communication skills in interns by effective use of extension methods to make them better extension worker; To help the interns to understand and appreciate the agricultural problems of the village with special reference to constraints in the application of latest farm technology; To acquaint the interns with the functioning of various agricultural researches, development, agro-based marketing industries, extension agencies and other allied organizations involved in rural development.

ACTIVITIES The whole RAWE programme was carried out under the supervision of some teachers from the Department of Agriculture , that stayed continuously with the students during their all activities related to RAWEP to guide , supervise and monitor the work . The activities done during the whole semester of RAWEP are as follows : Guest lectures Village surveys Farm visits Educational trips Industrial visits

GUEST LECTURES The guest lectures were held at the Department of Agriculture and were delivered by some of these Honourable Personalities (Progressive Farmers) related to their occupation (main or subsidiary) : Mr. Balwant Singh Virk (Apiculture) Dr. Bhavya Bhargava (Floriculture) Mr. Davinder Singh (Polyhouses) Mr. Harpal Singh Bajwa (Mushroom Cultivation)
- 7. 2. VILLAGE SURVEYS Village surveys were carried out in the different villages of district Fatehgarh Sahib (Punjab) . All the students were divided into 3 or 4 groups and each group got a different village to survey . We had to choose one farmer randomly and to fill a proforma in which we had to gather all the information about the farmer , his family and all his work in the field . Mirpur – is a village situated in Khamanon tehsil of Fatehfgarh Sahib district . It was the first village selected for our group to carry out the survey . Cropping pattern was common i.e. Wheat-Paddy.
- 8. Mandaur – is a village located in Sirhind Block of Fatehgarh Sahib district in Punjab . The farmers of this village has a different cropping pattern . They are growing potatoes among the other two main crops , paddy and wheat .
- 9. Ranghera - is a medium size village located in the Amloh tehsil of Fatehgarh Sahib district . More than half of the village is dependent on agriculture for income . Cropping Pattern is as usual – Wheat- Paddy. Bhal Majra – is a village located in Sirhind tehsil of Fatehgarh Sahib district of Punjab . The main occupation of the people of this village is farming . The farmers of this village grows sugarcane along with the main crops wheat and paddy .
- 10. Kheri – is a village situated in Sirhind tehsil of Fatehgarh Sahib district of Punjab . It was the last village of our Village Surveys . The people of Kheri village are well educated , caring , co-operative and helping . The farmers of that village uses all the modern techniques and facilities for farming . Cropping Pattern was Wheat-Paddy .

FARM VISITS In our this Programme of RAWE , we visited different farms where we gathered knowledge about various fields of agriculture and other subsidiary occupations started by the farmers . Such as Dairy Farms , Agriculture Farms , etc. Following were the farms we visited in our RAWE programme as one day trip :- Dairy Farm , Morinda (Punjab) Bains Dairy Farm , Sounda , Fatehgarh Sahib (Punjab) Biocarve Seeds , Dhablan , Patiala (Punjab)

- 14. 5. INDUSTRIAL VISITS Various Industrial trips were organized in the Fatehgarh Sahib and Ludhiana districts , which are under the supervision of Punjab Government , such as MARKFED , Khanna , Ludhiana (Punjab) VERKA Cattle Feed Plant , Khanna , Ludhiana (Punjab)
- 15. CONCLUSION We gained much knowledge about farming and farmers by interacting with them . Less participation of females in the agricultural field . We got much knowledge about Fisheries , Dairy , Protected cultivation of Vegetables , etc. Subsidiary occupations are less investment and more profit things and also we should stop following the same cropping pattern of Wheat-Paddy and should start cultivating some other useful crops .
