Ian was born in Apartheid South Africa and brought up in a family that actively opposed the system of entrenched racism that prevailed in that country at the time. Under different circumstances Ian might have grown up as a well-known artist, but instead pursued a lifetime of activism, first as a volunteer and later as a professional election strategist and organizer for the liberal Progressive Federal Party. When apartheid ended he became an activist for reconciliation: actively working on the ground at community level for the National Peace Accord structures to make Nelson Mandela’s dream of the South African Rainbow Nation a reality.
