Restorative justice programs are becoming a more common alternative to the criminal justice system, as evidenced by a large increase in cases referred to one such program between 2011 and the beginning of a given year. Reconciliation through restorative justice is more successful when victims feel perpetrators are genuinely remorseful and understand the severity of their crimes, rather than facing punishment through courts. However, overcoming decades of war and distrust will take time and a conscious effort to promote peace and trust between formerly warring groups.
