Classification of DrugsClassification of Drugs
Drugs which are abused can be classified in variousDrugs which are abused can be classified in various
ways:ways:
1. Depressants – sedatives (downers) act on the nervous system promoting
relaxation and sleep.
2. Stimulants (uppers) increase mental activity, relieve fatigue, increase
alertness and offset drowsiness.
3. Inhalants – volatile substances derived from ether or chloroform
4. Alcohol – a dangerous substance which triggers the central nervous
system and may damage vital human organs.
5. Narcotics – (opium-based drugs) cocaine, ecgonine and coca leaves.
6. Marijuana – cannabis sativa leaves
7. Hallucinogens (psychedelics) – produce changes in mood and behavior;
produce changes and hallucination.induce a state of excitation of the CNS
as shown by changes in mood.
8. Tranquilizers – used in treating nervous disorders or calm psychotic
patients.
