“Have to” expresses obligation. 
We can use “have to” for rules or 
things you are obliged to do, for 
instance, when you are at work.
EXAMPLES: 
- Cooks have to know about food. 
- Mechanics have to know about engines. 
- A lawyer has to defend a person.
“Need to” is used to express 
things we should do because they 
are necessary but not compulsory.
EXAMPLES: 
- Some secretaries need to speak English 
and French. 
- A waiter needs to walk carefully.
NEGATIVE FORMS: 
“Have to” “DON’T HAVE TO” 
“Need to” “DON’T NEED TO”
EXAMPLES: 
- Computer programmers don’t have to know 
about cameras. 
- A lawyer doesn’t have to speak many 
languages. 
- Waiters don’t need to taste the wine to know
