BBFC
• British Board of Film Classification .BBFC: is a company in the UK which
decides the ratings on the films being released in the UK.
• The British Board of Film Censors was set up in 1912 by the film industry as an
independent body to bring a degree of uniformity to the classification of film
nationally. Statutory powers on film remain with the local councils, which may
overrule any of the BBFC’s decisions, passing films we reject, banning films we
have passed, and even waiving cuts, instituting new ones, or altering
categories for films exhibited under their own licensing jurisdiction.

• Why are ratings important?
• Certificate ratings are increasingly important, the language and detail used in
films nowadays is increasing rapidly and more importantly the ratings are
developing. Ratings are important because they are dependent on who is
allowed to watch the film or buy it, this is important as to what is suitable for
each age rating, nudity is not suitable for U,PG,12, which is why the certificate
rating was made. Inappropriate things in films are hidden from children such as
detailed killings and swearing. Even though if a parent buys it and lets the
younger person watch it this is when the child starts copying things from the
movie such as swearing and inappropriate language.
U
• U stands for Universal. This means the film will be suitable for a child 4 years and
over.
• U ratings contain Mild things such as Mild threat, Rude humor and very Mild
language. Words such as ‘Hell’ would be used in these type of films. Also in these
films the only ‘sexual behavior’ it will containing would be kissing or cuddling.
• Violence in the film will be very mild and will entail a/ brief fight scenes. There may be
parts where the characters are put in distress but is quickly resolved. This is because
the things children will watch they will copy and remember, so the contents in films
has to be very mild and not obvious and always have a happy ending.
• The ‘bad person’ in the film will/ may have a weapon but the weapon will not have
much attention to it and the ‘good guy’ will not carry a weapon. Ideally any language/
behavior that a child could/may copy must be disapproved of. The film can have a lot
of different themes as long as it is appropriate for the audience.
• Some examples of ‘U’ Rated films:
• PG means Parental Guidance to watch a PG your age range must be aged 8 or older because some
scenes will be unsuitable for young children. Although the classification may be PG the film may not
been intended on be PG but was classed for it, this may or may not be a problem as long as the film is
suitable it will be fine for an 8 and over to watch the film.
• Ideally PG films should be watched or investigated by the adult of the child before allowing the child to
watch it because in may intent unsuitable for the child from the adults point of view. Domestic
violence, bereavement and racism maybe used.
• A PG classed film will not contain any inappropriate themes for the child, the film will explore
challenging issues and how to over come them, a moral of the story. The language used in the PG
classed film will be mild bad language such as ‘Shit’ or ‘son or a bitch’ but if the language is used
aggressively then the movie will be classified in to a higher category. Sex scenes are very unlikely but
they can be in the film if they are undetailed if the child is unlikely to understand then it can be allowed
into a PG category, comedy can also lighten the impact of the sex scene, treated the same as sexuality
undetailed and light. Violence if used in the PG rated film would be mild and there should really be no
violence in a PG, there can be some blood but how the injury occurred would not be seen. Violence
would only really be shown in a comic, fantasy point of view.
• Some examples of ‘PG’ Rated films:
• The A in 12A means Accompanied by an Adult. Audiences may go to see the film if they are 12 or over
unaccompanied. Under 12’s must be accompanied by an adult. The rating 12A is commonly known for
cinema use only, if the child enters the movie without an adult the cinema may loose their license.
• 12 A and 12 categorized films are very similar so it is hard for the cinema to put them into categories. In a
12A strong language may be used depending on the manner it’s used in. If the strong language is used in
an aggressive way then the film would most likely be rated as a 15, there is allowed strong language in a
comic view in a 12a rated film.
• Strong discriminative language/views used would probably not be classed as a 12 or 12A and would be
classed as 15 or higher is necessary. Unless clearly amended. Sex or any sexual behavior may be briefly
mentioned or shown but very discretely, spoken sex references must not go no further than what is suitable
for the age groups of whom watches the film. There can or may be nudity but sexual nudity must be
discrete and if it I not then it would be classed as a 15. moderate violence may be used but it is not
addressed in much detail, there should be not detail on blood or injuries, but in some cases there may but
a brief sight of the injury.
• Examples of ’12 A’ Rated films:
• Audiences 12 or over are allowed to watch films that are categorised as 12
• 12 rated movies will contain things such like swear words/strong and offensive but must not be used
frequently.
• In a 12 rated film sex would briefly be portrayed, verbal sex references would be very discrete and
only suitable for the age groups watching (younger teens) Verbal references would not be shown to
this age.12 would be used for video’s, blue-rays and DVD’s rating system rather than 12A as that is
used for cinema only.
• Nudity may be shown but sexual nudity must be discrete because of the audience ages but if it isn’t
discrete then the film would go up to 15. Fight scenes may be seen and weapons (long fight scenes)
and also weapons that may be available for the 12 year olds to get will not be glamorised in 12 rated
films. Sexual violence for example rape will not be mentioned or shown unless discrete and brief.
• some horror films can be classed as 12 or 12A depending on the context, moderate physical or
psychological as long as they are not to frequent and the tone is not disturbing for 12 year olds.
• Examples of ’12’ Rated movies:
• A 15 certificate rated film is for an audience of aged 15 or older the context is strong frequent language, it
will contain strong violence, sexual nudity, brief sections of sexual violence and verbal references of
sexual violence, discriminatory language/behaviour, drugs, verbal references to sex, a lot of swearing
used and there may be racist, homophobic or other discriminating language. There is no genre that I
unable to be rated as a 15 as long as it is appropriate for 15 year olds.
• There could be a great deal of strong language used in 15 rated films, there is not limit on the number of
uses of strong language for example ‘F**k’. There can be some mild use of the stronger terms such as
‘C**t’, optional on the manner the character uses. Although if it is frequent or/and with aggression then it
would go up to the next category 18.
• There can be homophobic, racism and any other discriminatory language and the film could explore
themes such as that, although the film can contain some of this the whole film must not be offensive by
using discriminatory language or behavior. There can be violence in a 15 rated film but it should not focus
on the pain or injury and gory images are unlikely to be in a 15. there may be descriptive reference to
sexual violence. There may be drug taken but the film altogether must not be aimed to promote or glorify
the drugs.
• Examples of ‘15’ Rated films:
• To watch an 18 certificate rated film you must be an adult (18 or over). An 18 rated film will contain 18
rated films are not suitable for children only. 18 rated films contain very strong violence, frequent strong
language/ very strong language. There will be scenes of strong violence, strong horror and blood and
gore. There is not limit to the amount of strong language used in a 18 certificate rated film, the way it is
addressed such as aggressive uses may be used also and it may be used frequently, also by a follow up
of strong violence too.
• There may be real visual sex (in some circumstances ) which are only passed as 18 rated films, this will
contain very clear visual sex, strong material, sexual animated images or other very strong sexual scenes
but they may be put in to R18 rated films
• There can be racist, homophobic or there discriminatory language and the film could explore more about
this relating to discrimination, although they can do that the film must not break the roles of the film
industry, it may be that the film is about discriminatory language or it is its main theme.
• 18 rated film horrors may contain very strong gory scenes and very strong horror. 18 rated films can be
about very strong subjects such as gangs and stabbings or rape.
• Examples of ‘18’ Rated movies:
• The R stands for Restricted. The R category is specially and legally restricted.
• These films may only be shown to adults especially in licenced cinemas, these
films have/Porn films and have a lot of sexual scenes which will arouse people.
Theses sort of films can only be brought and Seen by ADULTS.
• The R18 rated films are legally restricted classification for extreme works of sex
and strong material such as that . These sort of films can be supplied to Adults
Only in licensed shops and are for adults only although you adults can watch them
in specially licensed cinemas too.
