10-15 minutes before any watch to take over the

Taking over the watch
When relieving the watch the look-out man should assure themselves that
their relieve is well acquainted with the situation.
Many accidents happened because the watch has been unsatisfactorily or too
hastily relieved
⢠Prior to taking over confirm the vessel's intended track, course and speed.
⢠Note any dangers to navigation expected to be encountered during the
watch.
⢠Be aware of prevailing and predicted tides, currents, weather, visibility and
the effect of these factors upon course and speed.
⢠Note any errors in gyro and magnetic compasses.
⢠Note the status of all bridge equipment.
⢠Be aware of the presence and movement of vessels in sight or known to be in
the vicinity.

Handing Over the Watch
The lookout shall:
⢠ensure that the members of the relieving watch are fully capable of
performing their duties.
⢠ensure that the vision of the relieving watch is fully adjusted to the
light conditions.
⢠ensure that all OOWâs orders are fully understood.
The lookout shall not hand over the watch:
⢠If there is reason to believe that the relieving rating is not capable
of carrying out the watch keeping duties effectively, in which case
the OOW should be notified.
⢠When a maneuver is in progress until such action has been
completed.

1.1.2.5 The duties of a bridge watch keeper
Watch keeper primary duty is to report to the officer of the watch or
the conning officer of whatever sightings which includeâŚ..
Reports are not only limited to sightings but also include hearing of
sound signals by other vessels, navigational aid, etc.
Lookouts are the "eyes" and "ears" of the ship.

Information to be exchange with duty officer regarding,
1. Traffic, Weather, Passage plan, Bridge equipment and
standing/Night orders.
2. Visibility, state of weather and sea; traffic density, and
other activities occurring in the area in which the vessel is
navigating;
3. The attention necessary when navigating in or near traffic
separation schemes or other routing measures;
4. The additional workload caused by the nature of the shipâs
functions, immediate operating requirements and
anticipated maneuvers;
5. The fitness for duty of any crew members on call who are
assigned as members of the watch;

6. Knowledge of and confidence in the professional
competence of the shipâs officers and crew;
7. The experience of each officer of the navigational watch,
and the familiarity of that officer with the shipâs equipment,
procedures, and maneuvering capability;
8. Activities taking place on board the ship at any particular
time, including radio communication activities and the
availability of assistance to be summoned immediately to
the bridge when necessary;
9. The operational status of bridge instrumentation and
controls, including alarm systems;

10. Rudder and propeller control and ship maneuvering
characteristics;
11. The size of the ship and the field of vision available from
the conning position;
12. The configuration of the bridge, to the extent such
configuration might inhibit a member of the watch from
detecting by sight or hearing any external development; and
13. Any other relevant standard, procedure or guidance
relating to watch keeping arrangements and fitness for duty
which has been adopted by the Organization.
