Did you know:
1. Every year, American HS students score poorer on the SAT (23rd) then most
developed nation students?
2.The head of College Boards says it is because American teachers provide a "coat
of paint" - a mile wide and skin deep, whereas, Colleges want much more depth on
many fewer subjects- and that is how the other countries teach, and how the 3 part
SAT has been testing.
3. This means you probably know a little bit about a lot of things, but will not test well
on what is on the SAT unless you prep.
4.The SAT is back to the origional 2 part 1600 point format. The 3 part SAT (2400
point total, based on 3 sections of 800 points each) has been retired.
5. The current SAT is even MORE in depth on even FEWER topics (essay no longer
mandatory) getting the score only on traditional multiple choice, electronically scored,
blacken the space questions, and will cover the IMPORTANT math and reading/
writing tools/rules with specific examples for you to do.
6. Most US schools have adopted the recommended "major” subjects to teach in
depth (the common core) but none as yet teach with the needed depth in the "major"
topics of the common score. You will still need to prep those topics to do your best.
SAT/ACT PREP Course Intro- This course is designed to
help you Achieve the following Goals:
1) Know why you need to take and do your best on the SAT or ACT
2) Be able to know what you are likely to get wrong before taking ANY
test, but specifically for the SAT or ACT.
3) From that list, be able to pick the efficient set of things to study that
will best raise your test score in the time available.
4) Know how to Sign up for and take the SAT/ACT
5) Teach you how to study any material more efficiently, so that the time
you do spend learning is more effective.
6) Teach you “insider” test-taking techniques such as how to guess
effectively to improve your score on any test that allows guessing
7) Teach you how to pick a good career for you, and then a good post
secondary institution to best help you get there, including visits,
applications, $$ issues.
8) Teach you tips on how to be more effective getting results from
counselors, teachers, bosses, and people you need to work with.
About Goal 1.(Know your Enemy)
• Q1. What is the SAT/ACT and why do we take it?
• A. 1.These tests are NOT “IQ” tests, but rather tests of our
“readiness” to handle College “readin, 'ritin, and 'rithmatic.
• A2. Smart people who have barely paid attention will do as well on
SAT/ACT as average people who have worked hard, but “Smart”
without “Work” will not get you through college, where-as “Work”
without “Smart” will. Just 50 points could mean, you will be going
to a less good school (less career $$$, not meeting the key
people of your future life). More than that may mean no college for
you!
• A3. Financial aid, also relies on your SAT and ACT scores.
The better the scores, the better the offer tends to be! It may make
the difference between affording a good college and not. Even if
you are admitted, do get a scholarship, higher SAT or ACT scores
because you prep-ed can get you MORE money to help you pay
the bill! 50 SAT points or 3 ACT points might mean the difference
between $3000 in scholarship money and $6,000 in scholarship
money, each year!
Goal2. Learn how to know what you don't know before taking any
test and learn how to fix it
College WILL be harder than High School, because the same
range of grades is used, but the lowest 3 out of 4 students are
now gone. (Only 1 in 3 starting freshmen in engineering are
there one year later, for example.) Colleges know this, and
admit 4 times as many freshmen as they expect to graduate.
They HAVE to flunk out 3 of 4 they initially accept.
This means, even if you work much harder in College, you need to
improve your ability to know before a test if you are ready for the
test, and to improve your “ease of learning” if you hope do as
well as you did in High School, let alone not flunk out.
Q5 How big a deal is applying just this 80/20 Rule?
An example of “getting” 80% of what you didn't “get” when you took the practice
SAT- You got You missed 80% of that You'd have
Readin' 400 400 320 720
'Rithmatic 500 300 240 740
TOTAL 900 (no help) 1460 (with help)
If you only got half of the 20% of the stuff you didn't know that
you worked on, you would still gain 280 points, have an
1160, and I will help you when you have to “guess the rest”
as well!
Prep courses like this can and do add 150 to 500 or more
points to SAT scores, vs the practice test. The do it by
finding what you don't know, picking the important 20% of
that, and helping you learn it.
Q. Really? How can we know what we don't know to get a better grade, then learn
the right 20% of that to give us 80% of the value of having learned everything we
didn't know? Tell me briefly, NOW. (Hint: Memorize the 3 steps we will use,in
meeting goal 3 below)
3.a Take a practice SAT or ACT test, and print out the report to see what the
subjects were we got wrong (100% of what we don't know). (They are broken
down by specific skill, difficulty.)
3.b For Reading/Writing: Do school homework assignments using the red (spelling)
and green (syntax, punctuation) of a word processor. Right click on the errors, fix
them. Make flash cards for the 20% that keep occurring over and over (80% of
the value if learned). When you retake the SAT practice test, you will score
higher.
3.c For Math: Look at the links to a lesson to teach you how to solve the problem
which the practice test offers. For the top ranked 20% of your errors, (80% of the
score you missed) go to Kahn's academy and use Kahn's practice questions to
check your ability to do correctly. (Just continue Kahns lesson if you can't- he
diagnoses why you still missed the concept, teaches you that next, until you are
cured, then check yourself again).
Goal 4. Where Can I register for the SAT/ACT Tests?
 Http://sat.collegeboard.org Go on line and check it out
 Ask your Guidance Counselor for any required info you don't know.
For ACT, go to http://www.act.org/products/k-12-act-test/
OK- get a piece of paper and restate the 2 questions below and answer them,
then get your instructor to initial it.
1. What is Goal 1?
2. What are the 3 steps I just told you we will use to accomplish Goal 1
If you don't remember, look back and study these slides until you can answer
the questions. (Hint: when something is on a review, it will be on the test.)
3. While getting the paper initialed, ask the instructor anything you want to ask.
4. Open a word processor and write a paragraph. Show the instructor your
paragraph, then right click on any red or green underlined areas and try to fix
them. Show the instructor the result. Use a word processor to write all your
written homework and show me two of the files at the next session.
5. Either now or before the next lesson, take the free practice full length SAT
test. (If you have already registered and have a report, just print it out and do
step 6 below)
https://www.khanacademy.org/test-prep/sat
http://www.act.org/products/k-12-act-test/ For ACT
6. Print out the results before the next lesson with me. For each question you
got wrong, Kahn has a video that you can watch by clicking on the list of
questions shown on the page shown in step 5. above. Each video explains
the concept you missed, and how to do it correctly, then offers a new
question of the same type for you to try again. This works VERY well to find
and fix your weaknesses without reviewing things you do well already.
