Put out the Fire, how viable is the E-
Cigarette in helping smokers quit?
April 14, 2014
A quick introduction to what is and how does an E-cigarette work.
An e-cigarette consists of 3 parts: a cartridge that holds the nicotine solution, a vaporizer
and a battery to power the vaporizer. How this works is simple, sucking on the e-cigarette
will trigger the vaporizer to react on the nicotine solution to gaseous state, which is then
inhaled by the user.
As of today, the debate on whether the E-cigarette is a healthier alternative to convention
smoking has yet to be resolved. But many countries have laws placed to govern the use of E-
cigarette. Check out Wikipedia’s list to see what other countries have done on the topic of E-
cigarettes. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electronic_cigarette#Legal_status)
In Singapore, the usage, sale and other interactions with E-cigarettes lies within the
jurisdiction of Health Science Authority[i] (HSA). It is clear that Singapore takes a strong
point on alternative forms of nicotine consumption even without the existence of E-cigarettes
with the high tax levied on nicotine products. Sale of such E-cigarette products is illegal in
Singapore.
One might ask then, how bad can E-cigarettes be?
Studies[ii] on the nicotine solution have shown that it still carries various cancer-causing
substances like conventional cigarettes. However, there is still not enough evidence and
research on this new innovation. What can be certain will be that the harmful effects of
inhaling tar can be removed from E-cigarettes. Here is a list of Q&A published by FDA[iii]
on the use of E-cigarettes. Currently, World Health Organization has not endorsed E-
cigarettes as a smoking cessation towards conventional cigarettes[iv] as the safety of E-
cigarettes has yet to be demonstrated scientifically.
There are numerous research papers on E-cigarettes but until long-term effects of E-cigarettes
are known, it is very unlikely big organizations like FDA and WHO will approve E-cigarettes
as alternatives to conventional smoking.
Therefore, the best way to quit smoking is not through substitute products but to stay away
from all nicotine products entirely.
In any case, we all know that smoking is no good for our lungs so we need to detoxify and
nourish the lungs through supplements. Cordycpes are one of the best lung nourishing herbs
and have been used for chronic lung diseases. Wasabi can do the same too. Well, we can
share more on this another time.
Stay healthy and always remember "Health is Wealth".
