Question:-How material utilization in the cutting room can be
enhanced?
Put your thoughts with relevant case studies.
Clothing cutting is a very important section for manufacturing process
where garment material is cut. Before the cutting process in the garment
industry, textile fabrics are saved for cutting, are counted and inspected.
The cutting process is planned, material cut markers are made and fabric
spreads are laid for cutting. We know that fabric cost represents 50% to
70% of the total production cost in the garment industry. If we want to
reduce costs or maximize productivity, we should increase the use of
materials in the cut room. The development of cutting room technology
for higher productivity, best product quality and use of the most efficient
components is still the goal because a proper utilization of the fabric can
help the industry to achieve great profit.
The process that can enhanced the material utilization in the cutting
room:-
1. Well cut plan ready
Cut plans should be prepared very carefully to maximize material use in
the cutting room. It should be based on various limitations for comfort
 Cutting table operational length.
 Minimum / maximum number of garments should be marked.
 Minimum / maximum number of plies will be kept.
2. Inspect the fabric before spreading
The fabric must be inspected before spreading on the cutting table.
This is because the fabric can have various defects which if not removed
before laying the fabric, increases the damage to the cut room.
3. Cutting the fixed pattern
By cutting the garments components properly, we can save the fabric
from wastage.
4. Proper marker planning
If we use the maximum marker length and maximum lay height, the
fabric waste can be reduced.
5. Sorting Fabric Roll
If the fabric rolls are sorted according to the shaded and wide width,
it eliminates the problem of shade variation and can create multiple
markers depending on the width of the fabric. When we use the same
marker for different fabric widths, the edge can be wasted. Through this
we can improve the use of fabric by reducing edge damage.
6. Use of low shrink fabric
When a fabric shrinks more than tolerance, the cost of the fabric will
increase. Therefore the cost may be more.
8. Advanced cutting method
If the cutting operation is not done properly, a huge fabric can be wasted.
Using the latest technology, cut to size should be done more efficiently
than manual cutting.
With this all the material related to cutting can be used properly.
a) CAD system-Auto nesting.
b) Cut order planning- By using software for cut order planning , we
can save fabric in the cutting room.
c) Intellocut-It is a material saving software. We can take
help of this useful software during fabric cutting to enhance material
utilization.
9. Skilled operator
A skilled operator can use cutting the material correctly. Its efficiency
can be reflected in the reduction of marking, fabric waste and work
accuracy.
Since fabric is the main raw material of any garment, very little amount
of fabric is stored. Each garment can save a considerable amount each
year, which can increase its profits. Process for proper material handling.
Proper investigation of fabric damage during the period of cutting
process management can help reduce material wastage. Hopefully,
the above points will be followed to enhance the material utilization in
the cutting room.
