umbrella and refers to the specific area of IT that has to do with
communication.
This discipline provides knowledge, skills and attitude to learners about
information technology. So, as most countries used, the Nomenclature
indicates with the name IT (Information Technology).
What is Information technology (IT)?
• the use of any computers, storage, networking and other physical
devices processes to create, store, secure and exchange all forms of
electronic data.
• the use of computer systems or devices to access information.
• the field concerned with all aspects of managing and processing
information, especially within a large organization or company.
Rationale
Technology provides students with easy-to-access information,
accelerated learning, and fun opportunities to practice what they
learn.
It enables students to explore digital technology and deepen their
understanding of difficult concepts, particularly in STEM (Science,
technology, engineering, and mathematics). Through the use of
Information technology inside and outside the classroom, students can
gain 21st-century technical skills necessary for future occupations.
General objective
To literate students with 21st
century technology of skills and awareness
of the ways in which IT used and ready them to accelerated learning

 Apply a variety of ICT skills to enhance social, economic, ethical and moral
issues.
 Practice safe, legal and ethical means of using ICT.
 Appreciate the new and emerging technologies.
Learning philosophy of Information technology
IT use the learning philosophy of constructivism in order to help
students to build their knowledge but also can use the learning
philosophy of essentialism sometimes in order to give teachers a
chance to share their basic academic knowledge. And also, teachers
can use other philosophies accordingly.
• Constructionism guide and encourage others to make necessary
changes that will be beneficial to their future
• It is often described as 'learning by doing, as a tool to promote
learning, to teach a set of computer skills that students will need in
everyday life
What is worth knowing?
Learning IT has the following worth’s:-
• student will familiar with information technology to enhance
their learning
• Students will utilize the digital world innovations, adapt it to their
working environment, and create their own.
• Students will enable to access and share information very
important in their daily lives
• Ethiopia will gain national competitive advantage and improve
the quality of human life if students learn IT properly
Roles of Teachers and students
Activity
1. What should be the role of the teacher in teaching IT ?
2. what should be the role of students in learning IT?
What should be the role of the teacher?
• Strengthens the Learners' Internal motivation by creating a positive
attitude towards Lessons
• Support students to develop critical thinking and problem solving
skills by using brainstorming questions and activities
• Lead students in the right direction to acquire IT knowledge, skill and
attitude in different ways
• responsibility in acquiring and constructing knowledge.
• guide students to do activities and support them to catch the concept
• a facilitator of Learning Process and timely Feedback
What should be the role of students?
• Attempt to answer the brainstorming questions with their prior
knowledge
• Attend attentively and acquire knowledge, skill and attitude from the
lecture
• Do the activities in group or with their friends and share idea on the
issues
• Ask teachers if any thing not clear from the lesson
• Do practical exercise with computer individually as well as in group
What are the educational core values of IT?
• Integrity and honesty
• Teamwork (commit themselves to working as a team)
• maintain a sense of self respect,
• discipline
• responsibility
• Ethical personality
Situational analysis to implement IT
• What Is SWOT Analysis?
• SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats) analysis is a
framework used to evaluate a company's competitive position and to
develop strategic planning. SWOT analysis assesses internal and
external factors, as well as current and future potential.
• SWAT analysis presented as follows:
1. Strength to teach IT
 In existing situation one of the strengths to implement IT education is the
curriculum material. These teaching learning materials has developed by
considering different countries experience of IT education.
 The teacher’s guide which helps teacher properly lead what they will do in
every lT Lesson
 Student has a great interest to learn IT and their instinct ability to
manipulate the computers and software
 Opportunity to find simply IT information by browsing the internet.
2. Weaknesses to teach IT
 Schools Lack of IT resources like computer, computer lab, Internet infrastructure
and software. Even no electric power in most of rural schools.
 Teachers dedication to implement IT curriculum properly
 Lack of appropriate IT teachers to implement the curriculum. Even currently most
of the IT teachers do not have sufficient knowledge and skill to teach IT subject
 Most school IT Teachers do not have internet access to supplement the curriculum
and improve their knowledge and skills Students don’t have their own computers
to practice and access to Internet at home
 Time allotted to teach IT education in Schools is different and not sufficient.
Because The area of IT teaching needs more time to practice for students but the
reality is different in schools.
3. Opportunities to teach IT
 The government gives attention to teach IT in general education. As the IT
policy mentioned IT has a great role to the development of the country.
 The IT labor market saturation gives opportunity to get IT graduate to be a
teacher at school. That means every year most university of Ethiopia train
and graduate in related field of IT.
• Government program to upgrade teaching profession by incrementing
salary and provide housing allowance. It creates motivation to love the
profession
4. Threats to teach IT
 IT teachers lack pedagogical knowledge and skills to apply different methods and
active learning approach in their lesson. Because Universities train technical IT
professional for other world of work.
 The economic level of the country Ethiopia challenges to provide necessary IT
resources such as computer, computer lab, Internet lines, brand software for
teaching
 Implementation of IT education as a tool by incorporating with other subject area
 Challenges of large class size to train students in practical activities
Teaching and Learning approaches
IT by nature helps the teacher to facilitate active learning ( learning by
doing). Teachers should let students to use computers practice
individually, by group and through other mechanisms.
Approaches to teaching
21st century learning skills are tools that can be universally applied to
enhance ways of thinking, learning, working and living in the world
The skills include critical thinking/reasoning, creativity & innovation
/creative thinking, problem solving, collaboration, communication and
global citizenship. So, to attain IT skills we apply different approaches.
Cont’
Inquiry and Interactive
• From a student point of view, inquiry-based learning focuses on
investigating an open question or problem.
Learner centered approach
Individual focus, presentation, work in group
Active learning
• Also called learning by doing, is a method of learning in which
students are actively involved in practical exercises.
Assessment and evaluation Strategies
Continuous assessment and Formative evaluation
A type of assessment that occurs during the classes involving regular
observations.
• can be used to improve instruction and student learning
• to inform in-process teaching and learning modifications.
• To identify students problem and support them
• There will be evaluation as well
Summative evaluation
which are used to evaluate student learning progress and achievement at
the conclusion of a specific instructional period and semester. Eg. Final
exam
Differentiation in Teaching IT
• Refers to the responses that teachers make to learners' needs
• In your IT class you have to support different types of students
• High achiever
• Low achiever
How do you apply this issue in your lesson?
learning areas of IT subject
1. Introduce Information technology (information system)
( history, IT application, IS and social implication, hardware and software, data representation., file
management)
2. Application software
(word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, concept of database, image processing & multimedia…..)
3. Computer networking
( types of network, Transmission media and Types of wireless systems………..)
4. Network and computer security
(privacy and security ,Computer viruses, network security)
5. Web development
(www, website design, HTML basics, CSS basics XML basics, )
6. Introduction to programming
(algorithms, object oriented programming , programming language)
RECOMMENDATION
 To improve the quality of IT education, teachers currently working in the
profession needs in-service training to teach the curriculum effectively
 All schools do not have sufficient resources like computers, computer lab and
software for teaching and internet infrastructure for teachers as well as for
students to access info.
 Schools also need to be provided with the capacity to regularly upgrade their
own IT infrastructure. These challenges should be resolve with scheduled time
plan and working with NGOs.
cont’
 Time allotted to teach IT is not enough as a standard. As studies shows
different schools have different period allotment. Therefore, as a standard
the time allotted to teach IT should be more than 3 periods per week.
 Shortage of IT teachers should be considered. The levels in which IT
curriculum implemented, appropriate and qualified teachers should be
employed. In order to implement the curriculum properly, teachers should
be motivated to love their profession.
