Editor's Notes

• #11: Now that we’ve covered the attributes of this new system and the client benefits, let’s take a look at what’s inside the new IBM PureFlex System.
• #12: Speaker Notes: IBM PureFlex System Expert at sensing and anticipating resource needs to optimize your infrastructure Factory integrated and optimized system infrastructure Integrated management Automation and optimization expertise All PureFlex systems are: Fully optimized Born virtualized Have a no compromise design with system level upgradability Are designed for cloud
• #14: First, we'll start with the integrated infrastructure. IBM offers you one system that brings your resources together. It's designed for future generations of technology. It delivers energy efficient power and cooling, which is key to getting the maximum performance out of all the components over future generations. And, unlike a lot of other solutions, we support multiple architectures, but don't require a lot of expensive, non standard components. IBM PureFlex System provides incredible capacity for compute, memory, and storage with a high-level of IO operations in a single rack – with the ability to have up to four full racks in a single system.
• #15: No compromise designs for integrated compute nodes that support POWER7 or x86 architectures provide the performance behind the IBM PureFlex System. It allows you to share your network, storage and other resources across Power and X86 applications. And we've built in the security so that when you start the system up, it's doing all the validation and checks across the physical and virtual environments to reduce risk and save administrator time in configuring security.
• #16: Now let's look at storage. Storage is integrated right into the PureFlex System with IBM’s Storewize V7000 and, later, as an even more tightly integrated storage node that goes right into the integrated infrastructure eliminating cables and simplifying configuration. Either option is integrated directly into the PureFlex System, providing integrated management across storage, compute and systems networking resources. In addition you will be able to lower storage costs because your new and existing storage is fully virtualized; and you can migrate data without disruption from older, slower devices to new devices. We maximize the performance and minimize the cost with the built-in expertise of intelligent tiering and smart data placement – across all virtualized storage. The Storwize V7000’s backup and recovery capabilities can help protect your data so that you get business continuity and the ability to recover in case of a disaster.
• #17: So what about networking? IBM is focusing on systems networking – the networking built-in to the system to provide maximum bandwidth between all elements of the system with high performance. This high performance networking can provide up to 80 gigabits of bandwidth per compute or storage node maximizing performance for virtualized, cloud environments. And you don't have to buy it all right away. You can pay as you grow because we have some of the industry's first scalable switches with industry‑leading bandwidth. Virtualization is built right in, with virtual machine ready capabilities tracking the IP addresses as virtual machines move around the various resource pools in the system. And unlike some other options you may have, it also works with your existing network infrastructure -- whether you have one or 10‑gigabit Ethernet, fiber channel or Infiniband. Our solution is offering up to 16‑gigabit fiber channel capability and full data rate Infiniband . This is truly industry‑leading scale-in, systems networking.
• #18: Now let’s look at how the design of our PureFlex Systems makes a difference. Most people don't realize that most of the traffic that's going to occur in these virtualized systems - over 75 percent - is going to be between nodes in the system. That’s because of the virtualization we're doing… and the virtual machines moving around within the cloud and system pools and applications talking to each other. Less than 25 percent of system network traffic actually goes up and down between the system and the top of rack switch. So by eliminating nearly 75% of the data from having to go to the top of rack switch, the system can cut the latency in half. Because you get better throughput, you have fewer servers that are trying to overcome the bottlenecks in the network; and, you get faster virtual machine migrations to really take advantage of the system pooling capability we’ve provided and provide the cloud performance you need.
• #19: Simplified management can vastly improve the experience you have with a system. For example, you can see here just how some of the new user interface features we've designed in our new Flex System Manager give you direct access to resources within the infrastructure – both physical and virtual resources. We have built a new chassis map that gives you fast, direct access to the components in the system. The system pool dashboard gives you a view of all your workloads and the virtualized resource pools in which they are running. And a new quick find feature lets you easily locate any of thousands of managed end points. The Flex System Manager provides one management console for all your resources; its unique integration across physical, virtual and workloads provides new capabilities not found in other systems such as automated maintenance modes that are virtualization aware. You can start to manage workloads and let the system automatically manage IT resources. Security comes preset from the factory so that the people who need to be doing management are doing the tasks that you want them to do.
• #22: Now let’s review some of our Troy NGP offerings. We can sell NGP piece parts but at GA of NGP that will not allow us to neutralize the Cisco UCS “ease of use” advantage. However, on day 1, we are also delivering the flexible, pre-built and integrated NGP bundles called the Foundation offerings. There are, of course, 3 different sizes, each of which has different minimum capabilities, but all can support both POWER and x86 nodes. Because many of the planned features of NGP System Manager will not be available on day 1, I would strongly encourage you to sell SmartCloud Entry with each Foundation solution in order to maximize the ease of use, deployment and management attributes of the solution while delivering on the promise of a more agile, flexible and responsive data center that can meet new demands from the business quickly. Note that our packaging of the Foundation Editions is somewhat analogous to Cisco VCE Vblocks and HP VirtualSystems but we have some advantages relative to their offerings. If I neglect to discuss these on the next chart, please remind me to do so. CLICK to Advance
