The kidneys regulate plasma and interstitial fluid by forming urine. This regulates blood volume, waste products, electrolyte concentrations, and pH. There are cortical and juxtamedullary nephrons. Glomerular filtration, tubular reabsorption, and secretion work together to regulate urine formation and blood composition. Filtration occurs as fluid passes through the glomerular capillaries, and the resulting filtrate enters the nephron tubules. Most of the filtrate is reabsorbed back into circulation as it passes through the tubules, resulting in concentrated urine.
