The document concludes that global sustainability governance followed an intermittent path with peaks in political activity coinciding with decennial Earth Summits, suggesting their major influence in driving more profound societal and political action on sustainability issues. It also finds that sustainability concerns shifted from a focus on pollution control and resource availability to emphasize balanced human development.
