Northeast Seattle Home
Addition & Remodel
The client wanted to double the
square footage of this house to make
rooms for everyone in the family.
This gave us the opportunity to
seamlessly change the character from
a modest rambler to a Classic Seattle
Box, adding gracious porches, Before Construction
balconies and eaves. The main floor
was also opened up to expand the
kitchen, add bathrooms, and
transform dining and living rooms to
suit the growing family.

Historic Keil House Addition
Aurora, Oregon
The challenge for this project was to
provide a sensitive Great Room addition
for this historically significant house,
built in 1873, and listed on the National
Historic Register, as well as documented
by the Historic American Building
Survey (HABS).
This is the distinguished Keil homestead,
named for the founding family of the
Aurora Colony in Oregon. The kitchen
for the house was in the basement, as
was typical for the time. The client
understandably wished to serve meals
more conveniently on the main level.
                                             Historic house with Cottage Addition
The approach taken was to create a
cottage behind the house, separate yet
connected by a cheerfully glazed
solarium. The original back porch was
therefore moved from its original
location and repositioned to create the
front porch for the new cottage. Since Great Room/Kitchen Concept Sketch
there was none, the garage was tucked
under the new addition, afforded by a
convenient natural slope on the site.
The plan includes a new sitting area,
powder room, interior stair to the garage
and green house, and a modern kitchen,
which can easily serve both buildings.
The interior detailing derives much of its
character from the existing spare but
noble proportions of the original house.

Bungalow Restoration in
 Ravenna, Seattle
 The approach for this 1923
 Craftsman Bungalow project was to
 restore a badly disfigured porch,
introduce a new fence and landscape
on a busy street, and take advantage
 of an unfinished basement. The
intent was not to insist on imposing
21st century fashion for the new Historic Photo ca. 1930
construction, but evoke the spirit of
 the original design. The new
drawings were done by hand--lead on
 vellum--a disappearing technology
appropriate to the size, scale and
 feeling for this project.
