The wood energy expo held in Nantes from 20-24 March 2013 was a success with 13,000 total visitors, including 7,000 professionals. 376 exhibitors from 21 countries presented the entire wood energy chain. Key topics at conferences included innovative energy conversion processes and wood fuel supply chains. Visitors included potential domestic, industrial, and local authority wood heating customers who provided positive feedback and expressed interest in wood energy projects.

- 2. 20–24 MARCH 2013 – NANTES WOOD ENERGY EXPO 2013 SALON BOIS ENERGIE 2013 The Bois Energie Expo, together with Biogaz Europe this year, was organised for the first time in Western France – a double event keenly anticipated by the 500 French and international exhibitors. Nantes, the European Green Capital for 2013, has held true. With 13000 visitors including 7 000 qualified professionals and 6 000 general public visitors who came in large numbers with concrete projects, the success was there. The Bois Energie Expo is unique in that it gathers each year in the same venue and at the same time the entire wood energy chain, from “forest to flame”. 376 European suppliers from forestry equipment, services, wood fuels and wood heating devices came to present an offering which is even broader, more inventive and more accessible to everyone. Be it domestic, An evermore influential event. industrial or local authorities oriented, the heat or CHP production from wood has clearly met its market in Nantes. Manufacturers, wholesalers, distributors : professional contacts beyond expectations The exhibitors confirmed two positive days reserved for Professionals on the Bois Energie Expo. For both existing and new exhibitors, the objective was to make them known or to consolidate their position in Western France. For the Italian company Ravelli (stoves), which conducts half of its turnover abroad, including 25% in France, it was necessary to find outlets through regional distributors and resellers, in order to affirm its brand in the region. The objective was the same for the Belgian company Skia Design (stoves), which was present for the first time on the exhibition. “Coming to Nantes was important to us, because for the moment we are mostly distributed in Northern France and we want to conquer the rest of the country. We did not know if Western France would be receptive. Our fears have quickly vanished, and we leave the expo with more reseller demands than we will be able to meet; we will need to be selective”. The doubt is also removed for the company Transmanut (supply equipment), which won the Grand Prix of the Innovation Competition organized within the framework of the Bois Energie Expo (wood fuel and supply category): “We rapidly realized that Western France is a region with potential”. - 3. salon 2013 The General Public in demand of information for future projects Personal contact with the sector’s professionals always provides a rich source of information for the visitors. During the weekend for the General Public, exhibitors and organisers saw very few ”onlookers” amongst the 6 000 visitors. The information stands (France Bois Forêt, Atlanbois, Ademe) were crowded. They provided advise to visitors who were looking for heating solutions or wanted to realise a project. “We are used to exhibiting at Bois Energie Expo. This year, we have noticed the interest for wood energy from everywhere in France”, according to Self Climat Morvan (pellet and wood boilers, cookers). For Fondis-Wodtke, a first time exhibitor and which gathered nearly 80 professional contacts and even more qualified general public contacts, the crowd on the stand and in the alleys could almost justify one more day for the general public… “We have spoken with people who came sometimes from far away, like Normandy, Paris and even Biarritz. The concept is successful, the demand is here, the public is ready and looks for quality information. The Conference A high level international conference with simultaneous translation, organised over two days, allowed 250 participants to familiarise themselves with a wide range of current subjects, for example: session on innovative process of energy conversion for medium and large scale power, mini-district heating, mini and micro-cogeneration, plenary session on biogas wood energy, supply chain wood fuels. The presentations are downloadable from www.boisenergie.com Business meetings On Tuesday 21 and Friday 22 March (morning), visitors and exhibitors had the possibility to participate in pre-organised International Business meetings – an opportunity to multiply professional contacts during the exhibition. Study tours Study tours were organised in parallel with the exhibition on various exemplary sites around Nantes: boiler houses, boiler manufacturers, wood fuels production sites... t Boiler house of la Chantrerie in Nantes : a boiler house including a 2,5MW wood boiler and two natural gas boilers (5 MW and 2,5 MW), as well as a district heating of about 2 500 m. t Wood energy platform of BEMA boiler room of Bourdaud sawmill in Nozay : a platform which processes 30,000 tons of wood fuels and managed by the Bois Energie Maine Atlantique company (BEMA), which gathers wood suppliers from the Pays de la Loire region. t Head office of the industrial boiler manufacturer Leroux Lotz (LLT), and wood boiler house of the NADIC in Nantes : the visit included LLT, a specialist in large scale biomass energy projects and the new wood boiler house of the district heating of Bellevue-Nantes operated by NADIC, subsidiary of DALKIA, is composed of two wood boilers of each 7 MW with condensers. - 5. salon 2013 The Visitors +18% in 2013 Two-way exchange on the stands. The Bois Energie Expo 2013 welcomed 13,000 visitors, up 18% from 2012. A snapshot of visitor feedback provides testimony to the events success : « Very good exhibition, friendly and knowledgeable exhibitors, to be repeated in Nantes.» « For sure, it is very interesting to see different heating appliances in operation...» « Excellent exhibition, many people available to to give you excellent explanations.» « I have been equipped with a wood heating system for 30 years; the exhibition has offered me the possibility to see with which boiler I will replace my current installation which is consequently getting old. » « I don’t regret my trip to Nantes, the exchanges with the exhibitors were perfect, many questions found their answers. » « We appreciated the clear and explicit conferences about pellets and their possible usages.» Professional Visitors 7 000 professionals (including 70% Professional Visitors from across the board of new visitors) visited the Exhibition of whom 85% were present during the two professional days and 15% during the weekend. 60% of the professional visitors were key decision makers (Chairman, Managing Director, Director). The split of professional visitors confirms the pertinence of the unique positioning of the Bois Energie Exhibition: 54% came for the wood and 46% came for the energy ! General Public Visitors 6 000 General Public visitors attended over the weekend, of which 94% were first time visitors and: • 87% expressed that the Exhibition exceeded or met their expectations, • 88% have a current heating project and 90% will choose wood energy, • 85% found what they were looking for. - 8. salon 2013 What the Exhibitors say Forestry and Wood fuels Nidal (France) At first we were doubtful about the location in Western France for the Bois Energie 2013, but we have been pleasantly surprised with the success of this exhibition. We are present at every edition and the fact that it changes venue every year allows us to touch a greater number of potential clients. Thank you for your serious work! Saelen Energie (France) For our first exhibition in the sector, we have been very well welcomed and attended to by the organisers. We really appreciated to meet all the actors, partners or competitors in our domain gathered in one place, which attracts a lot of qualified visitors. Westtech (Autriche) Once more, Westtech attended the Bois Energie in Nantes. Many visitors were present to gather information. Wood splitting demonstrations attracted a lot of public. We have noted a strong presence of visitors from Brittany and Normandy, as well as people from Isère, Atlantic Pyrenees and even from the Marseilles region! This exhibition is the defining meeting point of the wood energy sector! OFFICIAL RESULTS OF THE INNOVATION COMPETITION 2013 Category 1: Wood fuel supply chain Grand Prize – Transmanut (in partnership with Legras Industrie) - FMA-S (Commercialised) Articulated lorry with scraper floor and a blower. Allows delivery of humid wood chips for large volumes, allowing the construction of silos at street-level and thus making significant savings on civil works and equipments of medium and large-scale boilers. Congratulations of the Jury – Delox - SiCon Eco (Commercialisation expected in June 2013) Simplified filling level measurement device for small silos, for individuals and/or wood pellet suppliers. The device is equipped with a GSM modem, which allows remote monitoring of the filling level and possibly alerts the user and/or the supplier when the level is low. Significant effort on the price makes it affordable for individuals. Category 3 : Localised wood heating for the domestic sector Category 2 : Central wood heating for the domestic sector Grand Prize – Novotek - Cogemax (Commercialised since January 2013) Boiler coupled with an Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) scroll turbine, allowing simultaneous production of heat and electricity (microcogeneration), for the domestic market and small service industry. The organic fluid as well as the scroll turbine have been developed specifically for this product. It is robust, silent and affordable. Congratulations of the Jury – Fröling - P1 Pellet (Commercialised) Small-scale pellet boiler for households under the RT2012 building regulations. Very flexible, with the possibility to add a module for hot water, and/or a module for the heating network. Very compact and a high efficiency, minimised losses in standby mode. Also very silent (remote blower feeding pellets to the boiler). Grand Prize – Palazzetti - Ecofire Adagio (Commercialised) Airtight pellet stove with a very low power rating and a large power range (1 to 4 kW). Natural convection mode, with a piped heat exchanger developed specifically for this product. Innovative pellet feeding system. Interesting price. Congratulations of the Jury – Dixneuf - Protection murale (Commercialised since March 2013) Isolation and wall protection device, reducing the required distance between the wall and the stove. Easy to install and affordable. Grand Prize – OekoSolve - OekoAITop Filterbox (Commercialised) Category 4 : District heating Electrostatic filtration device with humid cleaning. 80% reduction in particles. Interesting price. Congratulations of the Jury – Cogebio - Gasclean (Commercialised) Dry biomass gasifier, coupled with a hybrid biomass/fossil or 100% biomass burner. Very low pollutant emissions. Promising system for the replacement of fossil fuel burners, for the industry.
