  {WELCOME} Evie Hantzopoulos Executive Director RichardRoberts Chair, Board of Directors Dear Friends, Twenty-five years ago, Global Kids Founder Carole Artigiani fell in love. It was unexpected, consuming, challenging, but without a doubt, the right relationship to pursue. One that would transform not only her life, but more importantly, the lives of thousands of youth from underserved communities in New York City and later, Washington, DC. Twenty-five years ago, Carole met with a few young people to discuss a book on foreign policy that she was charged with promoting. She soon discovered that the ideas, opinions, and passion that the youth possessed were so compelling, that she wanted to meet with them regularly and provide more opportunities for them to tackle critical issues and develop their leadership. Twenty-five years ago, Carole unintentionally fell in love and started something that would become Global Kids. Along the way, Carole met Ken Miller. His strategic thinking, connections, resources, ideas and yes, love, helped grow and sustain the organization. Ken’s commitment to social justice, his deep involvement in the civil rights movement, and his respect for the contributions of young people guided his work as a long-serving member of our Board of Directors, including his tenure as Chair of the Global Kids Board of Directors. Tonight, we honor Chair Emeritus Ken Miller for championing the work of Global Kids and showing us all what an exemplary human being looks like. We also pay tribute to Carole and her vision, talent and tenacity, and for always believing in the capabilities and potential of our youth. With support from people like you, a small project blossomed into a well-respected, trailblazing organization serving 2,400 youth each week, employing 51 highly qualified staff who help develop dynamic, active global citizens and community leaders. Our alumni are quite accomplished, and you will understand the impact of Global Kids when you read their stories in the book you will receive tonight – 25 Years of Turning Hope Into Action – and meet them at this event. Many of you have stuck with Global Kids for years, providing unwavering support and friendship. Others are new friends to the organization.   Founded in 1989,and independent since 1993, Global Kids (GK) is a nonprofit educational organization that develops youth leaders for the global stage through dynamic global education and leadership development programs. Global Kids works with underserved youth to inspire them to achieve academic excellence, self-actualization and global competency and empowers them to take action on critical issues facing their communities and our world. {MISSION} {WHY GLOBAL KIDS} The lack of understanding of global affairs seriously impedes the democratic process in the U.S. and throughout the world. There is growing recognition among researchers and providers that the most successful afterschool programs combine high-level content with opportunities for research, community service, and civic engagement. New York City and Washington, DC public school students possess assets like foreign language skills and international experience that are in demand in the business, government, and nonprofit communities. Schools frequently fail to engage students in the learning process, develop sophisticated skills, and integrate civic education, international relations, and key policy issues into the curriculum. Global Kids offers a range of year-round programs in schools, online, and at our headquarters. We work primarily with middle school and high school youth, and also provide professional development and capacity building services for educators and institutions, and special trainings for youth. GK programs are led by a team of highly trained professionals with backgrounds in education, international relations, creative arts, social work and digital media.   Ken Miller isa Senior Advisor at Teneo Holdings and former Vice Chairman of both Merrill Lynch Capital Markets and Credit Suisse First Boston. He is the President & CEO of Ken Miller Capital, LLC (“KMC”), which invests in and mentors early stage companies with significant growth potential. Mr. Miller has served as a member of the Board of Directors of Viacom, Inc., Intelsat Corporation, Kinder Care Learning Centers, CNA Surety and, now, Loews Corporation (NYSE: “L”). From his early days as a civil rights activist, Mr. Miller has been engaged in the not-for-profit community. Notable examples of his service include Directorships of Business Executives for National Security, Cities in Schools, Refugees International, the International Center for Transitional Justice, the National Committee on U.S. China Relations, the Asian Cultural Council and, of course... Global Kids! Mr. Miller is an active member of the Council on Foreign Relations. He is the Chairman of the Advisory Board for the NYU-Shanghai Program on Innovation & Creativity. In addition, Mr. Miller acts as advisor to the US State Department through its Advisory Committee on International Economic Policy, and likewise as senior advisor to Contour Venture Partners, a venture capital fund he helped create whose purpose is investing in early stage East Coast businesses. Carole Artigiani is the Founder of Global Kids, Inc and served as the Executive Director for 21 years. She continues to stay involved as Founder and President Emerita and serves as a member of the Global Kids Board of Directors. A former teacher of social studies and history on both the high school and community college levels, she was coordinator of Women’s Studies and the Graduate Program in Women’s History at Sarah Lawrence College from 1979 until 1987. Ms. Artigiani created Global Kids while serving as Managing Director of the Foreign Policy Association. She served as the Executive Director of Global Kids since establishing it as a fully independent, nonprofit educational organization in 1991. Ms. Artigiani was named a 2006 and 2007 Purpose Prize Fellow by Civic Ventures and is a recipient of the “Spirit of Anne Frank Award” bestowed by the Anne Frank Foundation. She is also a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and the Board of Directors of the Institute of Play.   Global Kids CoreLeadership Program. During the 2013-2014 academic year, Global Kids is serving 23 New York City and Washington, DC public schools, providing activities that increase attendance rates, promote safe and caring school environments, and integrate global issues into academic, extracurricular, and after-school programs. Through interactive workshops, field trips, and hands-on service learning projects, Global Kids students are encouraged to explore critical world issues and educate their peers about foreign affairs. Youth Conference. Youth in Global Kids Core Leadership Program annually organize a full-day conference on an international issue of importance. The students are responsible for selecting the conference theme and leading workshops throughout the day for an audience of over 600 students and teachers. This year’s Youth Conference will take place on April 4th and will focus on the theme of Youth Activism. The Human Rights Activist Project (HRAP). GK’s HRAP program addresses the absence of youth voices in the public policy decision-making process by training youth to become human rights activists. Students identify and research human rights issues and develop a campaign for social change. This year, all of GK’s HRAP campaigns are focusing on climate change and environmental sustainability. Undesirable Elements. Conducted in collaboration with Ping Chong & Company, Undesirable Elements is a dynamic, year-long theater project. Using dance, music, spoken word, and theater, students weave together their cultural heritage, personal stories, world history, and current events to develop compelling stories that tackle difficult issues such as globalization, discrimination, and poverty. Partnership with the Council on Foreign Relations. Through a unique collaboration with the world's leading international affairs think tank, Global Kids conducts an ongoing series of monthly roundtables and an intensive three-week Summer Institute for thirty high school students at the Council on Foreign Relations. College Counseling and Career Readiness. All of Global Kids' programs are designed to prepare young people for success in the sophisticated workplace of the 21st Century. In our College Counseling and Career Readiness Program, students receive intensive college and career exploration activites and ongoing one-on-one support as they prepare for life after high school. The Online Leadership Program. Through programming in gaming, animated video productions, and virtual worlds, GK has established one of the nation's leading programs that utilizes digital media to promote global awareness and digital literacy among youth. Curriculum and Trainings for Educators. Global Kids offers professional development, capacity building, and consulting services for educators, schools and organizations on GK's content and methodology. Trainings may be customized to meet the needs of the client.   2007 Over 600 studentsand educators attend GK's Annual Conference, “It's 2007: Do you know where your Environment is?” GK's High School for Global Citizenship hosts a number of distinguished guest speakers, including former child soldier and author Ishmael Beah. Global Kids moves to its new headquarters on 25th Street. The Global Kids Fellows program provides ten NYC public school teachers and youth workers with intensive training in GK's content and methodology. Six GK leaders in the Human Rights Activist Project travel to Mexico to join local NGOs working to address poverty and discrimination in Mexico. 2006 The Global Kids team of 34 professionals and 600 Global Kids youth leaders reaches over 16,000 teenagers in the classroom, at after-school sites, and at special events. Over 600 students and educators attend GK's Annual Conference on Global Media to address the impact of media on human rights. Global Kids becomes the first educational organization to conduct programs in the online virtual world of Teen Second Life. Global Kids leaders travel abroad on the Peace Boat to Kenya, Eritrea, Egypt, Turkey, Greece, Croatia, and Italy. 2008 GK Leaders participate in Red Hand Day and meet with Secretary General Ban-Ki Moon at the United Nations, the culmination of a worldwide youth campaign against the use of children in armed conflict. Over 500 students and educators attend GK's Annual Conference, “Politics: What's the 411?” Through the Undesirable Elements program, GK leaders write, develop, and perform an educational theater piece that incorporates their cultural heritage and personal stories with world history and issues raised in the 2008 elections. 1989 Launch of Global Kids at the at Foreign Policy Association Carole Artigiani secures $50,000 from NYNEX and $215,000 from NYC Board of Education to pilot Global Kids at eight schools. 1990 The first GK Conference is held for 80 students and educators. GK initiates its first academic and professional development programs. GK begins the Global Action Project, a youth video and global awareness program that has since become an independent organization. 1991 GK moves to the New York Alliance for Public Schools at NYU and secures tax-exempt status. GK, UNA/NYC, and UNICEF co-sponsor a conference on the Convention on the Rights of the Child. The GK Annual Youth Conference is held at the World Trade Center. 1992 Over 100 students and educators attend GK's Annual Conference on the Environment. Global Kids Leaders conduct violence prevention projects in East New York and Washington Heights. 1993 The organization's operations move to 561 Broadway. The FY93 budget is $300,000. There are five people on staff. GK becomes an independent organization. 1994 Over 300 students and educators attend GK's Annual Conference, “Help Wanted: Peacemakers.” GK collaborates with NY Columbia Presbyterian Hospital for Comunidad Sana y Segura in Washington Heights. Youth create a mural and produce a prize-winning video, Tales from the Heights, promoting healthy communities. 1995 GK launches its flagship Power of Citizenry Leadership Program, which promotes civic participation, youth empowerment, and social activism. GK is selected by the Catalog for Giving as one of 14 “extremely effective grass-roots organizations for at- risk youth.” Over 300 students and educators attend GK's Annual Conference, “Rx for Community Healing.” 1996 GK begins a seven-year collaboration with WNET/ Channel 13 to produce the Teen Leadership Institute on diversity. GK staff and youth participate in the UN Conference on Sustainable Development in Turkey. GK Leaders and staff conduct workshops in Sweden, Denmark, and Croatia. The budget for FY97 is $540,000. There are nine people on staff. Global Kids roundtables are launched at the Council on Foreign Relations. 2003 GK is awarded a grant to open the High School for Global Citizenship. Over 750 students and educators attend GK's Annual Conference, “War – Stop it. Peace – Be it.” Nine youth and three staff facilitate workshops from NYC to Costa Rica on the Japanese Peace Boat. Through GK's Playing For Keeps gaming program, students work with professional game designers to develop and launch an online game, Ayiti: The Cost of Life, which explores the obstacles to education in rural Haiti. Eight Global Kids leaders travel to the Dominican Republic to collaborate with community groups working on environmental sustainability. Over 600 students and educators attend GK's Annual Conference, “Global Kids: Be the Vaccine,” on HIV/AIDS, malnutrition, and food justice. GK youth present to Heads of State at the UN General Assembly and at the First Spouses' Luncheon. 2010 In Global Kids' I Dig Brazil program, students collaborate virtually with teens and scientists at the Chicago Field Museum to explore paleontology and biology. Global Kids expands to Washington, DC, launching after-school programs in two DC public schools. GK's Founder Carole Artigiani steps aside as Executive Director. After 14 years with Global Kids, Evie Hantzopoulos is appointed Executive Director. Over 100 GK leaders and their supporters rally at City Hall Park in June 2009 to advocate for student input in Department of Education decisions. 2011 Global Kids is awarded the National Summer Learning Association's Excellence in Summer Learning Award for its U.S. in the World Summer Institute held at the Council on Foreign Relations. Ten GK Leaders travel to Kenya for four weeks to conduct collaborative projects with Kenyan youth using social media. GK launches the Global Gateways Institute in DC, with 15 youth leaders participating in the five-week program and service-learning trip to Brazil. GK wins $200,000 in the Chase Community Giving Contest. Over 50 former participants attend GK's first annual Alumni Reunion. 2012 Students in GK's Human Rights Activist Project create the “Honor the Check” campaign to pressure elected officials to honor environmental promises made at the UN Earth Summit in 1992. Five students take the group's message to the United Nation's Rio+20 Conference in Brazil. Fourteen GK-DC students travel to Haiti to create short documentary films with the Ciné Institute exploring issues affecting young people in Haiti. Over 600 students and educators attend GK's Annual Conference on Climate Change. GK is named one of the Best Nonprofits to Work For by The NonProfit Times. 2013 Global Kids expands its work to six Washington, DC public schools and is accepted into the DC Catalogue of Philanthropy as one of the best small charities in the Greater Washington region. Students in GK's Human Rights Activist Project build a campaign to install green roofs at schools throughout the city and celebrate the installation of their first green roof at Bryant High School in Queens. Over 600 students and educators attend GK's Annual Conference on Violence and Peacebuilding. Eighteen GK students spend three weeks exploring media and society in Bosnia as part of the Department of State's American Youth Leadership Program. 2014 The FY14 Budget is $4 million. There are over 50 people on staff, including eight alumni. After receiving a $500,000 capacity-building grant from a private foundation, GK prepares to develop a scalable model that will be tested in 10 new NYC schools. GK begins developing a technical assistance and capacity-building program in Haiti. Global Kids celebrates 25 years of youth development at the Council on Foreign Relations. 1997 GK spearheads Responsibility + Involvement = Change, a youth-run town meeting on caring. Four GK Leaders and three staff conduct three weeks of workshops on democracy, human rights, diversity, and community building for Suncokret and Europe House/ Zagreb in Croatia. GK returns each year through 2002. The Labor Project and the Empowerment Project on Homelessness are launched. Global Kids begins Youth Pulse, a youth produced radio program on health issues, aired on WBAI. 1998 Over 250 students and educators attend GK's Annual Conference, “Generation Globalization.” As a result of their work as GK Leaders, five high school graduates receive full scholarships to Ramapo College. GK's Citywide Leadership meetings move to The Door due to space constrains at GK's main office. The FY99 budget is $617,000. There are ten people on staff. 1999 GK receives the President's Initiatives on Race Citation for Exemplary Practices in Inter-Racial Dialogue. Over 400 students and educators attend GK's Annual Conference, “Human Right – Right On!” Eight youth and two staff conduct workshops at the Hague Appeal for Peace. GK is one of the three organizations chosen nationality to develop curriculum materials civic participation and lead a national conference for youth for the Arsalyn Foundation. GK launches its Undesirable Elements theater performance program. 2000 Over 400 students and educators attend GK's Annual Conference, “Is Justice Just This?” GK launches the Girls Health Leadership Program The FY01 budget is $817,000. There are 13 people on staff. Global Kids launches its Online Leadership Program. 2001 GK staff and youth attend the World Conference on Racism in South Africa. Following 9/11, GK conducts workshops on discrimination against Muslims, xenophobia, and the U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East. GK receives the Ghandhi/King Award for Nonviolence at the United Nations. Over 500 students and educators attend GK's Annual Conference, “Children's Rights: Our Rights, Our Lives, Our Future.” GK is selected by the Afterschool Corporation (TASC) to be a professional development training provider for its sites and conducts over 150 trainings for educators over the next three years. 2002 The Human Rights Activist Project (HRAP) begins a campaign for immigrant rights. Global Kids launches Everything After: a 9/11 Youth Circle, bringing together over 350 youth from around the world via an online platform to discuss critical issues in a post 9/11 world. Over 600 students and educators attend GK's Annual Conference, “Youth of Many Nations Confront Discrimination.” 9 Since 1989 Global Kids’ address has changed: 749 7th Avenue, New York University, 561 Broadway, 1825 K Street, 137 East 25th Street but the goal remained steady: to assist youth to identify major global problems and work together on their solutions.
