• The male rappers are represented to be wealthily and dominating.
This is shown by the camera and the artist drawing attention the
rappers large amount of jewellery, money and large mansions. This
representation allows audiences to see the wealth of the rappers,
and to see the money they are making through music. Then are also
represented to be the stronger sex and the more dominating sex,
this representation is shown through the women having a clear lust
for the men and the men sitting back and relaxing.
• The women in these videos are represented to be sexual objects
and have a lust for the rappers. This is done through the women
wearing very little clothing and dancing sexually in front or around
the male rappers, because the women are shown like this and
represented to have a lust for the men, it creates an impression
that their identity's are attached to the male rappers and are
dependent on them.
Here you can see the male
artist showcasing all his
money, this reinforces the
wealth representation of
them.

clothing in an expensive surrounding, this
reinforces the idea that women are sexual
objects
The rapper is surrounding himself in women which
reinforces the idea that women are seen as
possessions
Mise-En-Scene
• The male rappers are usually presented to be dressed casually e.g. jeans and a t shirt. However what they
are wearing is over powered by the gold chains and the jewellery. This adds to the idea that the rappers are
wealthy and are not afraid to show off their wealth. The male rappers are also shown to have weapons
which also reinforces the ‘tuff’ and street image that surrounds them. The male rappers can also be seen to
be drinking and smoking to show off there party lifestyle.
• Women in rap music videos are shown to wear very little. There costumes are usually underwear based or
shown to be wearing swim wear. This is done to present the women as sexual objects and to show the
sexual lust they have for the male rappers. The fact that they are wearing little clothing can also be seen as
the women are vulnerable to the patriarchal society that have been created in the music videos.

back clothing e.g. jeans and a jacket.
Here you can see the lack of women's
clothing and the sexual nature of them
Camera work

The use of mid shot
allows the audiences to
see the male rappers
wealth, chains and
relation to violence,
which adds to the idea of
them being the dominant
gender. The use of mid
shot also allows the
audiences to see the
women in there lack of
clothing, and focus on a
particular park of their
body.
Use of Drone
The use of a drone allows
the audiences to see the
large mansions and the
lifestyle of the male
rappers. The use of a
drone allows the
audience to gather a
better idea of the use of
setting that is being used
in these music videos,
which allows them to
gather a better
understanding of the
song.
Two Shot
The use of two shots
allows the audiences to
see the relationship
between both the male
and the female in the
music videos. The two
shots allows the audience
to see the lust the
women have for the male
rappers and the casual
nature that the males
rappers have towards the
women.
Wide Shot
The use of wide shot
allows the audience to
see the full lifestyle of the
rappers and to gather
more information about
the lifestyle. The use of
wide shot also allows all
the information to be on
display and to show the
relationship between
both the sets of genders.
Relation to Target Audience
• The target audience for this genre of music is male.
• Women are sexually objectified in many of the music videos, the fact that they are seen as sexual objects will
attract the male target audience for this genre of music and encourage them to watch the music video. The
fact that the women are wearing very little clothing will encourage a male audience to want to watch the
video, and the lifestyle of guns , money and drugs of the male rappers will also attract the male audiences as
it is a stereotype that men are interested in money and drugs.
Will anyone find this offensive?
• Male activities in the music videos – It is a possibility that people will find these videos offensive especially
the male habits and choice of lifestyle that are clear in the video. The casual use of guns and drugs in the
music videos may spark a reaction from the government and people who are not familiar with this type of
lifestyle, because of this they may see the videos as a threat and become offended by it.
• Women in the music videos – Feminists may be offended by the genre of music and the music videos that
surround the music videos. They may find it offensive because women are clearly being objectified and are
being shown as the less dominant of the two sexes.
Stereotype
• These music videos and the genre of music reinforce the stereotype of males being the dominate genre and
that women are reliant on them, however this stereotype is slowly decreasing as women are becoming in
more positions of power. The music videos however do reinforce the stereotype of rappers as the videos
show them taking drugs and living a care free lifestyle.
Other Representations
• Age – The people that feature in these music videos are young adults/ teenagers. They are shown to be care
free, drinking and doing drugs. This reinforces the idea that young people are wealthily and enjoy life.
However it also supports the negative representation of drug abuse and drinking at young ages and having a
lack of reasonability.
• Class - The rappers lyrics show that they are proud of their class and where they have come from ‘the
streets’ and their lower class background. By them showing of their money it shows they are proud of what
the have accomplished and are not afraid to brag about it.
• Region/Place – The music videos are shot in America, and in the cities that the rappers grew up in, this
reinforces the idea that they are proud of their surroundings and where they grew up.
• Ethnicity – The stereotype of black rappers as drug dealers and pimps and involved in gang grime is
reinforces in their music video, as they proudly show off their guns and drugs, because they show badly
show of their drugs and weapons they are reinforcing this stereotype and creating a negative representation
of themselves.
