2D vs. 3D motion analysis:
The Baseball Pitcher
Billy Reilly MSPT, CSCS
Problem
• Currently gold standard is 3D motion
capture(ie Cortex) but not easily accessible to
population
• 2D analysis available and cost effective but
only small amount of studies study validity
and even smaller percentage on baseball.
• Standard parameters set are based on 3D
capture and marker positions
Gap in Knowledge
• How does 2D analysis(Dartfish) compare to 3D
analysis during pitching?
• Is 2D analysis valid/reliable?
• Saggital
• Frontal
• Transverse
• If it is, can parameters set by 3D apply to 2D?
Purpose
• To determine intra and inter rater reliability of
2D capture on pitchers
• Determine what the reliable measures are and
create set parameters for others to follow
Study Aim
• Compare measures to see what is reliable
• Determine if we can feasibly set parameters
based off 2D.
Proposed Methods
• 2-3 raters measuring with Dartfish videos
obtained here in lab(measure/re-measure)
• Compare inter/intrarater reliability
• If certain measurements can be reliably
obtained- catalog measurements to determine
trends/parameters
Critiques of Literature
Video analysis software increases the interrater
reliability of video gait assessments in children
with cerebral palsy
S. Borel, P. Schneider, C.J. Newman *
Gait & Posture 33 (2011) 727–729
• Shows good inter/intra-rater reliability
• Only sagittal measurements
• Small sample size
• Not Baseball Specific
The evaluation of an inexpensive, 2D, video
based gait assessment system for clinical use
U. Chris Ugbolue, Valerie M. Pomeroy, Enrica Papi, Philip J. Rowe, Konstantinos T. Kaliarntas, Andrew Kerr, Leo
Earl
Gait & Posture 38 (2013) 483–489
• Good intra/interrater reliability
• Only sagittal plane
• Small sample size
• Does show good correlation between 2D and 3D
• States multiplanar measurements difficult to
capture
An analysis of functional shoulder movements during
task performance using
Dartfish movement analysis software
Leenesh Khadilkar, Joy C. MacDermid, Kathryn E. Sinden, Thomas R. Jenkyn, Trevor B. Birmingham, and George
S. Athwal
Int J Shoulder Surg. 2014 Jan-Mar; 8(1): 1–9.
• Moderate to good inter/intrarater reliability
• Small sample size
• Does not use anatomical landmarks for marker
placement. (perhaps helpful for multisegment
motions, i.e. thoracolumbar ext in combo with
shoulder flexion. Does not appear as reliable
Reliability of 2-Dimensional Video Assessment
of Frontal-Plane Dynamic Knee Valgus
During Common Athletic Screening Tasks
Allan Munro, Lee Herrington, and Michael Carolan
Journal of Sport Rehabilitation, 2012, 21, 7-11
• Good intra/interrater reliability in frontal plane
• Does not measure in tranverse or sagittal plane
• Not baseball specific
Concurrent validity and reliability of two-
dimensional video analysis of hip and knee joint
motion during mechanical lifting
Beth S Norris, PT, OCS, PhD, and Sharon L Olson, PT, PhD
Physiotherapy Theory and Practice, 27(7):521–530, 2011
• High reliability and validity of sagittal
measurements of hip and knee flexion
• Small sample size
• Only sagittal
Current Research
• These Studies help support use of 2D analysis
in sagittal and frontal plane
• Multi-planar and transverse planes not
supported or measured.
• Some maybe be measuring dynamic multijoint
motions but not baseball specific
Objectives
• Determine validity of measures between 2D
and 3D analysis
• Determine reliability between raters
• Develop set parameters with 2D analysis to
provide a quicker, more cost effective way to
measure pitching mechanics
