Cortical Mastoidectomy and Combined Approach Tympanoplasty (CAT) are surgical procedures for the ear that involve removing only the outer layer of the mastoid bone and accessing the middle ear through the ear canal rather than the mastoid bone. The procedures aim to avoid creating an open mastoid cavity and allow for better ear reconstruction and the ability to swim, but they require greater surgical skill and may have a higher failure rate or need for a second surgery compared to traditional approaches.
