What is important about where you live?
Community & housing for people with learning disabilities
Polly & Katharine
How do we get people more connected to their communities through housing? (1) More focus on getting ordinary housing Keeping people near families and support networks Natural & community supports Really supporting people to develop skills to rely less on paid support Personal budgets not having significant impact on people volunteering and helping their local community, choosing where they live and who they live with and relationships with friends (source: TLAP National Personal Budget Survey June 2011)
How do we get people more connected to their communities through housing? (2) Commissioning and contracting for community outcomes and incentivise use of natural & community supports Making money work-personal budgets, individual service funds & community development funding Stop the silo mentality of housing based services and develop a wider community role Work out a way for tenants to contribute to and improve their communities Pay attention to people getting social networks

Community Connections planning tool Providers Our organisation and the way we co-ordinate things ensures that people can make the most efficient use of their social capital Our organisation fully includes older and disabled people and we support them to participate in and contribute to activities Our organisation actively works with all local people to increase the ability of older and disabled people to get out and about and experience positive interactions
The economic case befriending schemes  cost around £80 per older person but could save around £35 in the first year of the scheme alone - the cost per member of a  timebank  would average less than £450 and could result in savings of over £1,300 per member, and -  community navigators  could cost under £300 with further savings of £900 per person in the first year due to reduced GP visits.
