Before the Revolutionary War, the British created a boundary between Native American lands and the colonies. As American settlers moved west after the war, Native American tribes like the Iroquois and Cherokee lost their lands. Several chiefs proposed options for how Native Americans should respond to western expansion, including accepting white culture, blending cultures, returning to traditions, or taking military action. Tecumseh advocated the last approach by trying to unite tribes to fight western settlement, but his efforts were undermined by defeats like the Battle of Tippecanoe against William Henry Harrison.
