OVERVIEW OF THE WEBOVERVIEW OF THE WEB
• Technical definitions:
– A webpage is a single HTML document.
– A website is a collection of related webpages interpreted by the
web browser.
In 2003 Web 2.0 started with companies using the web to develop
collaborative community-based sites(e.g social networking sites,
blogs, wikis, etc. ). The users are the most important aspect of
web 2.0.
The web comprises of the client side(displays on the browser) and
server side(for database inputs and outputs).
You can choose to hire a web
designer/developer to build your website or
do it yourself using a Content Management
System(CMS) like WordPress, Joomla,
WebExpress, CoffeeCup, etc.
It depends on your capital and the
functionalities required for the website you
want to build in order to pick which method
works for you.

PREREQUISITES FOR WEB DEVELOPMENTPREREQUISITES FOR WEB DEVELOPMENT
To successfully build a functional website you need to have the
following tools and knowledge on Web technologies.
TOOLS:-
A computer set/laptop
Text editor (Notepad, Dreamweaver, SublimeText, etc.).
A browser (Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Microsoft Edge, etc. ).
WEB TECHNOLOGIES.
You should be vast in the following web technologies:-
HTML 5 – HyperText Markup Language : language of the web for
content structure.
CSS 3 – Cascading Style Sheet : Presentation and view.
JS – JavaScript : behavior of the content on the web.
MySQL or PHP – for Database storage of customer/client
information's.
A knowledge of these first 3 web technologies makes you a good client
side developer while the 4th
technology (MySQL) puts you at the server
side.

START YOUR WEBSITE : (ACTION)START YOUR WEBSITE : (ACTION)
• Involves the following Stages:-
1. Secure a Domain Name {www.---.com}.
2. Decide to hire a web developer or do it
yourself.
3. Setup a design brief.
4. plan your content.
5. Extend your functionality with Third-party
tools.
6. Get social : Build connections and communities
on social sites.
7. Keep Tracking and maintenance.
Slide 8 Computer Applications Stage 1
SlideSlide 88
1.Secure a Domain Name
{www.----.com}
Domain name and Hosting are relatively
affordable.
It is the name you want your clients to find you
by on the web.
Unless you are using a hosted service, such as a
CMS (http://wordpress.com), you will also
need some web space to host your site at. Use
the same company for both hosting and domain
name registration. E.g (http://GoDaddy.com )
Slide 9 Computer Applications Stage 1
SlideSlide 99
2. Decide to hire a web developer
or do it yourself.
Unless Web design is your specialism, it’s
rarely worth having a go at it yourself
when designing a portable website, and
not worth your time to learn how to code
websites.
If you insist though, use a CMS such as
WordPress or Joomla for your first trial.
Slide 10 Computer Applications Stage 1
SlideSlide 1010
3. Setup a design brief.
This is the starting point of your web design.
Even if you are doing it yourself or hiring a professional, these are
the process you need to take:-
I.What type of website do you want? E.g. a simple online brochure,
an e-commerce site, a business blog?.
II.What is the main purpose of your website? Marketing aims and
objectives? E.g. enhance a brand, position you as an expert or drive
traffic.
III.What look and feel are you after? Should it follow a specific
brand image or colour scheme?.
IV.Who is your competition? What are their sites like? Who is your
target audience? E.g. are you a B2B or B2C Business?.
V.What is your main ‘call to action’? What do you want people to do
once they arrive at your website? Buy something ? Signup to a
newsletter?.
3.1 Your Design Brief
Slide 11 Computer Applications Stage 1
SlideSlide 1111
3.1 Your Design Brief(cont..)
I. How many pages will your website have? E.g. Home,
about, contact, services, products, individual
product pages, etc. How will the site be
structured?.
II. What functionality do you need? E.g. a ‘contact us’
form, shopping cart functions, online booking
system?.
III.Do you already have images or do you need your
designer to source these?.
IV. What media do you require? E.g. audio, video, flash
animation?
V. What is your schedule? Do you have a critical
launch date? E.g. to coincide with a product launch
or marketing campaign?.
Slide 12 Computer Applications Stage 1
SlideSlide 1212
4. plan your content.
Even if you are putting pages together in a CMS, it pays to
spend a bit of time first planning what you content you want,
and how you want it structured.
i. Information Architecture.
A simple flowchart showing what goes where.
Slide 13 Computer Applications Stage 1
SlideSlide 1313
5. Extend your website’s functionality with
Third-party tools.
These third-party web tools, and others like them,
enable you to offer a much wider range of services
than you could yourself. Subscription is cheap
compared to coding it yourself.
Most will provide you with a bit of code you just need
to copy and paste into your website or CMS:-
PayPal (www.paypal.com)
E-junkie (www.e-junkie.com)
Event Brite (www.Eventbrite.com)
Google maps (http://maps.google.com)
Their services range from customized web form,
shopping cart, event booking and map location.
Slide 14 Computer Applications Stage 1
SlideSlide 1414
6. Get social : Build connections and
communities on social sites
Compelling content will keep people coming
back for more. But to really engage your
clients and customers, you need to go where
they are and start conversations with them.
Remember the “80/20 rule”:- only 20% of
your online marketing should be spent on
your core personal/business websites, the
other 80% should be spent on your blog,
your Facebook page, your twitter feed, and
other social sites.
