The patient has a history of COPD and presented with worsening shortness of breath and cough for 10 days. A physical exam found wheezing in both lungs and decreased breath sounds. Laboratory tests showed an elevated white blood cell count and hematocrit. The patient was diagnosed with an acute exacerbation of COPD. The treatment plan included medications to relieve symptoms, reduce inflammation and treat any pulmonary edema or hypertension. Nebulized treatments were also prescribed to open the airways.
