■ Disability is an umbrella term covering impairments activity limitations and
participation restrictions.
■ Disability is not a health problem. it is a complex phenomena. Reflecting the
interaction between features of a persons body and failure of the society in which
he/she live.
A PERSONWITH DISABILITY
■ According to U.N 2006
Person with disabilities have long term physical mental
intellectual or sensory impairments which in interaction with in various barriers hinder
their full and effective expectations in society on an equal basis with others.
 According to Herr and Cramer, 1996
One who usually considered to be different from a normal person physically
physiologically neurologically or psychologically because of accidents disease birth defect
or developmental problem.

A person with disabilities means a person suffering from not less than 40 % of any disability
as certified by a medical authority like
• Blindness
• Low vision
• Leprosy
• Hearing impairment
• Loco motor disability
• Mental retardation
• Mental illness
• Physical disability
• Learning disability

Aim OfThe Day Observation
■ It started on 1992
■ It aims to promote the rights and well being of the person with disabilities in all
spheres of society and development and to increase awareness of the situations of
person with disabilities in every aspect of environment social political and cultural life.
According to American with disability
act (1970)
■ Many social barriors have been removed.
■ Also realized there is more work that needs to be done for people with disability like:-
1. Safety
2. School
3. Transitions
4. Healthy living
5. Acceptance
Role of social worker in the field of
disabled
1. Giving awareness to teachers parents and publics.
2. Individual and family counselling.
3. Providing psychosocial support.
4. Conducting case studies, case works, group works and community organization for their
improvement.
5. Arrangement of rehabilitation those who want.
6. Strengthening legislation on this field.
7. To enable them to self sufficient.
8. To help for improve quality of life.
9. To encourage public for welfare of disable.
10. To bring social support and to remove social stigma towards disability.

2. Providing trainings for their improvements.
3. Self employment.
4. Integration of disables from home to school.
5. Providing formal informal education

Problems of disabled person

Types of disability
■ Physical disability
A person with physical disability may need to use of some equipment for assistance with
mobility. It also includes people who have lost limps or who because of shape of their body.
e.g. :- Polio
Absent limp
 Intellectual or learning disability.
People with an intellectual learning or cognitive disability have a reduced capacity to learn task
or process information. A learning disability may make it difficult for a person to take
information and communicate.it make difficulty to reading writing calculations etc.
e.g.:- Dyslexia
Dyscalculia
Dysgraphia

■ Psychiatric disabilities
A psychiatric disability can develop at any age and is often not apparent
to other people. It is most misunderstood disabilities in the community and peoples
attitudes may be based on prejudice and myth.
e.g.;- Schizophrenia

Any type of issue while hearing voice. It can caused by a wide range of factors including
physical damage disease during pregnancy etc.

It is associated with damage of the nervous system that result in the lose of some physical or
mental function.
E.g.:- Epilepsy
