This document provides a review of metamaterials. It begins by discussing how metamaterials can overcome limitations of microstrip patch antennas like narrow bandwidth and low gain. It then defines metamaterials and classifies them based on their permittivity and permeability values. Several types of metamaterials are described, including electromagnetic, negative index, single negative, photonic, tunable, terahertz, plasmonic, acoustic, nonlinear, and elastic metamaterials. Applications of metamaterial antennas are discussed, noting they can enhance radiated power and allow for electrically small antenna size, high directivity, and tunable frequency. Surface and volumetric artificial magnetic conductors are emphasized.
