A Story Behind the Conference, or How pgDay Asia was born

This document describes the origins of the pgDay Asia PostgreSQL conference. It explains that Satoshi Nagayasu, chair of the Japan PostgreSQL Users Group, wanted to introduce PostgreSQL to Asian audiences and involve Asian communities in the global PostgreSQL community. He began traveling around Asia to meet people and gauge interest. With help from others in Asia and at FOSSASIA, the first pgDay Asia was held in 2016 as a joint event with FOSSASIA in Singapore. The document expresses gratitude to all who helped make the inaugural Asian PostgreSQL conference a reality.

- 3. A Few Years Ago... • I was working as chairperson of Japan PostgreSQL Users Group. • I just started thinking of new PostgreSQL conference for the people, mainly coming from Asian countries...
- 4. Why? • Wanted to introduce PostgreSQL to the Asian people. • Wanted to introduce Asia to the PostgreSQL community. • Obviously, itʼs worth involving Asian communities and people, but going to Ottawa & Europe is not easy thing for the Asian people.
- 5. “Can we make it?” “I have no idea...”
- 6. What could I do at that time? • Just nothing. • Because I was not familiar with Asian countries and communities.
- 7. What did I do at that time? • Just started inviting from Asia. • Just started traveling around Asia. • To find the people. • To know the people.

- 31. Itʼs safe to say that Asian PostgreSQL communities are able to run pan-Asian conference once a year.
- 32. And also FLOSS communities can help PostgreSQL communities, and vise versa.
- 33. Running conferences is a really tough job.
- 34. I canʼt thank Sameer more for his help while I was spending an extreme busy & tough time.
