This document discusses the application of Abraham Maslow's theories to sports coaching. It argues that Maslow viewed traditional education as emphasizing extrinsic learning with the teacher controlling reinforcement. For intrinsic learning and self-actualization, the focus needs to be on creating experiences that impact self-development. Coaches should get to know their athletes, accept them as individuals, encourage mastery through non-intrusive feedback, and help athletes find meaning through peak experiences. Pursuing self-actualization and transcendence can lead athletes to greater self-confidence, purpose, and a sense of unity beyond themselves. Understanding influence is also important for coaches to effectively help athletes improve performance and achieve their potential.
