ACCIONA presents the ACCIONA 100% EcoPowered, the
first fully electric vehicle to participate in the 2015 DAKAR
RALLY, the toughest motorsport event in the world.
The car is 100% powered by clean energy, has zero emissions and
will truly revolutionise the event.
This completely pioneering project will not only have to face an
event in which 50% of the participants retired last year, but also the
additional challenges resulting from the particular characteristics of
the car, which include the following:
Why make something even tougher and more difficult than
it already is?
Because we are pioneers and could not do it in any way which
did not agree with our principles.
We believe that not only can we compete in the toughest
motorsport event in the world, but that we can do it differently,
without generating any emissions and leading the way for others
to follow in future.
RANGE: a race with long-distance stages and a refuelling
system designed exclusively for the car.
EFFICIENCY: electric engine and energy storage system in
the most extreme conditions.
LOGISTICS: when you are the only vehicle using electricity
rather than fossil fuel, you have to create a whole logistics
system in order to recharge and change batteries during
the race.
SOLIDITY: it is a completely new prototype which will be
subject to the most extreme conditions and will prove its
reliability.

CHALLENGE

BATTERIES &
ELECTRIC POWER
10 11
The development of the ACCIONA 100%
EcoPowered has required two years of
R&D&i to achieve optimum integration
between the electric propulsion technology
powered entirely by batteries, and the
particular characteristics of a racing vehicle
prepared to face such an extreme adventure
as the Dakar.
One of the main
challenges of this project
was to calculate and
design the battery and
electricpropulsionsystem.
On the one hand, we
had to guarantee a high
range on all types of
terrain and over long
distances (storing a lot
of energy in the lowest
possible number of
batteries), and on the
other, ensure that it did
not overly hinder the dynamic performance
of the vehicle.
Its multi-faceted removable battery system,
with the capacity to adopt a different
number of on-board batteries according to
the mileage of each stage, the energy
efficiency of the motor/inverter equipped
with a kinetic energy recovery system
(KERS) and the logistics of in-race recharging
mean that we can tackle all the stages
without the need to carry a single litre of
fossil fuel on board.
The on-board generation of renewable
energy using a highly-efficient solar panel
system guarantees us a
supply of 100% renewable
energy to power all our
telemetry and safety
systems.
Thehighly-efficient(around
95%) synchronous electric
motor and the inverter
systemforenergyrecovery
underbraking,deceleration
or on downward slopes,
better known as KERS
(Kinetic Energy Recovery
System) is another of the
main features to ensure
that we successfully reach the finish.
A multidisciplinary team of 20 people has
worked on the development of this project,
which has also included the involvement of
ACCIONA’s Innovation Department.
E N E R G Y
S Y S T E M
12 13
One of the main challenges of this project
was to design a battery system capable of
accumulating enough energy to tackle the
Dakar’s long and tough stages, without it
taking up excessive space or being outside
the limits established by the FIA technical
criteria and regulations, ensuring that it falls
within the categories established by the
Dakar organisers (ASO).
The total weight of the vehicle and choice
made regarding the optimum power of the
electric motor were some of the other main
challenges that the engineering team had to
address.
In order to calculate the required energy, the
design team took into account similar
experiences in other categories of electric
competition cars and theoretical equivalences
between the fuel consumption of a
fossil-fuel-powered model with similar
characteristics. Parameters obtained were
converted into the efficiency levels typical of
an electric propulsion system, thus obtaining
the average energy consumption and
therefore the capacity of the batteries. The
minimum range required by ASO sports
regulations is 250km for fully electric vehicles.
The ACCIONA 100% EcoPowered has been
designed for an energy system capable of
achieving a range of 350km in race
conditions.
The conclusion of this study called for a need
to equip the vehicle with 4 packs of
interchangeable batteries (35kWh/unit),
which take up more than 2m³ of space and
weigh 400kg per unit. This energy set-up
eventually determined the type and
dimensions of the vehicle and the class in
which the ACCIONA 100% EcoPowered would
be registered: the T1 “NRJ-Alternative Energy
Challenge” class was chosen as the one best
suited our needs.
The efficiency of the electric motor/inverter
and the kinetic energy recovery system
(KERS), is another essential element in order
to guarantee the vehicle’s maximum energy
efficiency and therefore its range.
The solar panel in the rear wing supplies
100% renewable energy to the 12V electrical
system which, among others, the navigating
and emergency systems depend on. This
provides these systems with increased
operating capacity.
A) MAIN ENERGY SYSTEM
(LITHIUM-ION BATTERIES)
The main energy system of the ACCIONA
100% EcoPowered is based on four packs of
removable lithium-ion batteries which are
capable of storing a total of more than
140kWh (equivalent to the total electricity
used by 32 homes). They provide the peak
power required to supply the synchronous
electric motor with 220kW and 700Nm of
torque, at times in the race when maximum
drive is required.
When the battery packs run out, they are
replaced by others which are charged to their
maximum capacity. The batteries will be
replaced at points authorised by the
organisation during each stage.
The ACCIONA 100% EcoPowered is equipped
with a number of systems for recharging its
batteries through the electricity network.
With a domestic 220V 16A power socket, a
400V 16A-32A industrial connection and a
sophisticated 50kW fast recharging system,
better known as a “charging station”. The
latter has been chosen to recharge the
batteries during stages.
B) ELECTRIC PROPULSION AND KINETIC
ENERGY RECOVERY SYSTEM
Propulsion of the ACCIONA 100% EcoPowered
is completely dependent on a synchronous
electric motor equipped with an “inverter”
system (polarity inverter), designed for kinetic
energy recovery (KERS) when decelerating or
braking. The motor has considerable peak
power (220kW), equivalent to 300hp in a
fuel-combustion-powered car, and torque of
up to 700Nm. It is a real marvel which weighs
just 80kg, compared with over 280kg in its
internal combustion counterparts.
C) PHOTOVOLTAIC ENERGY GENERATION
SYSTEM
The generation of photovoltaic energy by
means of a 0.25m² high-performance solar
panel installed in the rear wing of the car is
another characteristic feature of the
ACCIONA 100% EcoPowered. With the
capacity to generate 100Wh (12V) of 100%
renewable energy, it is able to power the
telemetry and safety systems of the whole car.

My professional career as an engineer has always
gone hand in hand with technologies related to
environmental protection, particularly the
hydraulics and renewable energy sectors. As far
as sport is concerned, I have always chosen the
most environmentally-friendly and efficient
formula at any given time. This led me to
discover electric technology in motorsport and I
won the ElectroSeries championship (the first
European competition for fully electric cars on
permanent circuits) in three consecutive years
(from 2012 to 2014). I am also the current holder
of the European distance record with an electric
vehicle, achieved in 2013. My aim as a racing
driver is to show that motoring technologies
based on alternative, environmentally-friendly
energy are the way ahead and that these
competitions provide the best testing ground for
their improvement and eventual introduction
into our society.

The Dakar Rally is the creation of a true pioneer, Thierry Sabine. After getting
lost with his motorbike in the Libyan desert during the Abidjan-Nice Rally, he
returned to France fascinated by the desert and adventure.
In 1978 he created what is today considered the toughest motorsport event
in the world, with the motto “A challenge for those who go, a dream for those
who stay behind”. Thanks to his strong conviction and a touch of madness
typical of all the best ideas, the project quickly became a success.
After 30 years traveling around the African continent, in 2008, the only year in
which it was suspended for security reasons, the organisers decided to move
the rally to South America, primarily Argentina and Chile.

This year, the Dakar 2015 will travel through Argentina, Chile and Bolivia in an event
including several new features such as the marathon stages for all participants.
Over two days’ racing, the participants will not be allowed to be assisted by support
teams and will have to carry out any maintenance or mechanical repairs themselves.
It is undoubtedly an added difficulty which will increase the importance of strategy
for teams and drivers.
This year there will also be separate routes for different categories, including
alternate rest days.

BATTERIES & ELECTRIC POWER 10 11 The development of the ACCIONA 100% EcoPowered has required two years of R&D&i to achieve optimum integration between the electric propulsion technology powered entirely by batteries, and the particular characteristics of a racing vehicle prepared to face such an extreme adventure as the Dakar. One of the main challenges of this project was to calculate and design the battery and electricpropulsionsystem. On the one hand, we had to guarantee a high range on all types of terrain and over long distances (storing a lot of energy in the lowest possible number of batteries), and on the other, ensure that it did not overly hinder the dynamic performance of the vehicle. Its multi-faceted removable battery system, with the capacity to adopt a different number of on-board batteries according to the mileage of each stage, the energy efficiency of the motor/inverter equipped with a kinetic energy recovery system (KERS) and the logistics of in-race recharging mean that we can tackle all the stages without the need to carry a single litre of fossil fuel on board. The on-board generation of renewable energy using a highly-efficient solar panel system guarantees us a supply of 100% renewable energy to power all our telemetry and safety systems. Thehighly-efficient(around 95%) synchronous electric motor and the inverter systemforenergyrecovery underbraking, deceleration or on downward slopes, better known as KERS (Kinetic Energy Recovery System) is another of the main features to ensure that we successfully reach the finish. A multidisciplinary team of 20 people has worked on the development of this project, which has also included the involvement of ACCIONA’s Innovation Department.
  • 7. E N E R G Y S Y S T E M 12 13 One of the main challenges of this project was to design a battery system capable of accumulating enough energy to tackle the Dakar’s long and tough stages, without it taking up excessive space or being outside the limits established by the FIA technical criteria and regulations, ensuring that it falls within the categories established by the Dakar organisers (ASO). The total weight of the vehicle and choice made regarding the optimum power of the electric motor were some of the other main challenges that the engineering team had to address. In order to calculate the required energy, the design team took into account similar experiences in other categories of electric competition cars and theoretical equivalences between the fuel consumption of a fossil-fuel-powered model with similar characteristics. Parameters obtained were converted into the efficiency levels typical of an electric propulsion system, thus obtaining the average energy consumption and therefore the capacity of the batteries. The minimum range required by ASO sports regulations is 250km for fully electric vehicles. The ACCIONA 100% EcoPowered has been designed for an energy system capable of achieving a range of 350km in race conditions. The conclusion of this study called for a need to equip the vehicle with 4 packs of interchangeable batteries (35kWh/unit), which take up more than 2m³ of space and weigh 400kg per unit. This energy set-up eventually determined the type and dimensions of the vehicle and the class in which the ACCIONA 100% EcoPowered would be registered: the T1 “NRJ-Alternative Energy Challenge” class was chosen as the one best suited our needs. The efficiency of the electric motor/inverter and the kinetic energy recovery system (KERS), is another essential element in order to guarantee the vehicle’s maximum energy efficiency and therefore its range. The solar panel in the rear wing supplies 100% renewable energy to the 12V electrical system which, among others, the navigating and emergency systems depend on. This provides these systems with increased operating capacity. A) MAIN ENERGY SYSTEM (LITHIUM-ION BATTERIES) The main energy system of the ACCIONA 100% EcoPowered is based on four packs of removable lithium-ion batteries which are capable of storing a total of more than 140kWh (equivalent to the total electricity used by 32 homes). They provide the peak power required to supply the synchronous electric motor with 220kW and 700Nm of torque, at times in the race when maximum drive is required. When the battery packs run out, they are replaced by others which are charged to their maximum capacity. The batteries will be replaced at points authorised by the organisation during each stage. The ACCIONA 100% EcoPowered is equipped with a number of systems for recharging its batteries through the electricity network. With a domestic 220V 16A power socket, a 400V 16A-32A industrial connection and a sophisticated 50kW fast recharging system, better known as a “charging station”. The latter has been chosen to recharge the batteries during stages. B) ELECTRIC PROPULSION AND KINETIC ENERGY RECOVERY SYSTEM Propulsion of the ACCIONA 100% EcoPowered is completely dependent on a synchronous electric motor equipped with an “inverter” system (polarity inverter), designed for kinetic energy recovery (KERS) when decelerating or braking. The motor has considerable peak power (220kW), equivalent to 300hp in a fuel-combustion-powered car, and torque of up to 700Nm. It is a real marvel which weighs just 80kg, compared with over 280kg in its internal combustion counterparts. C) PHOTOVOLTAIC ENERGY GENERATION SYSTEM The generation of photovoltaic energy by means of a 0.25m² high-performance solar panel installed in the rear wing of the car is another characteristic feature of the ACCIONA 100% EcoPowered. With the capacity to generate 100Wh (12V) of 100% renewable energy, it is able to power the telemetry and safety systems of the whole car.

As far as sport is concerned, I have always chosen the most environmentally-friendly and efficient formula at any given time. This led me to discover electric technology in motorsport and I won the ElectroSeries championship (the first European competition for fully electric cars on permanent circuits) in three consecutive years (from 2012 to 2014). I am also the current holder of the European distance record with an electric vehicle, achieved in 2013. My aim as a racing driver is to show that motoring technologies based on alternative, environmentally-friendly energy are the way ahead and that these competitions provide the best testing ground for their improvement and eventual introduction into our society.
  • 11. COUNTRIES CROSSED EDITIONS The Dakar Rally is the creation of a true pioneer, Thierry Sabine. After getting lost with his motorbike in the Libyan desert during the Abidjan-Nice Rally, he returned to France fascinated by the desert and adventure. In 1978 he created what is today considered the toughest motorsport event in the world, with the motto “A challenge for those who go, a dream for those who stay behind”. Thanks to his strong conviction and a touch of madness typical of all the best ideas, the project quickly became a success. After 30 years traveling around the African continent, in 2008, the only year in which it was suspended for security reasons, the organisers decided to move the rally to South America, primarily Argentina and Chile. • 12. DAKAR 2015 This year, the Dakar 2015 will travel through Argentina, Chile and Bolivia in an event including several new features such as the marathon stages for all participants. Over two days’ racing, the participants will not be allowed to be assisted by support teams and will have to carry out any maintenance or mechanical repairs themselves. It is undoubtedly an added difficulty which will increase the importance of strategy for teams and drivers. This year there will also be separate routes for different categories, including alternate rest days. / 37th race // 7th race in South America /// 13 stages //// 3 countries: Argentina, Chile and Bolivia ///// 9,000 kilometres 22 23
