- 7. Design Thinking Principles 1. Understand & Define: Pound on the problem until there is a very clear definition on what the pain point is. 2. Observe & Research: Get off your couch! Talk to “experts” and make sure you get both sides of the story. Gather relevant stats and combine them with anecdotal evidence. 3. Generate as many ideas as possible: Do not judge or debate ideas. Focus on one conversation at a time. Prototype & test (over and over and over!) 4. Get feedback: from a diverse group of people, ESPECIALLY FROM END USERS Reserve judgment and maintain neutrality. 5. Choose: Set aside emotion and ownership of ideas. Avoid consensus thinking. Be aware that the most practical solution isn’t always the best. Test financial and business feasibility 5. Implement
- 8. My story: How I learned the importance of Design Thinking
- 10. Laboratory results showed 96% removal of pathogens. But… in the field they failed to reduce the incidence of water-born diarrhea cases and people were not using the filters. Exercise 1: discuss in groups of 2 what could have gone wrong?

- 12. Design flaws caused for not applying Design Thinking: 1. Plastic buckets kept water warm, which was not as refreshing as storing incontaminated clay pots 2. Free products were not appreciated and therefore recycled into other higher value applications, like irrigation 3. Faucets where low and in touch with animals, thus re-contaminating filtered water (it was not instructed to keep filters up high)
