AIDS
AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome) is caused by HIV (human immunodeficiency virus), which weakens the immune system, increasing vulnerability to infections. Over 70 million people have been infected with HIV globally, with 36.7 million living with it as of 2018; India reported 2.1 million cases. HIV is primarily transmitted through blood, sex, or from mother to child, and diagnosis is confirmed via a blood test.

- 3. DEFINITION AIDS (acquired immunodeficiencysyndrome) is a syndrome caused by a virus called HIV (human immunodeficiency virus). The disease alters the immune system, making people much more vulnerable to infections and diseases.
- 4. INCIDENCE • Global situationand trends: Since the beginning of the epidemic, more than 70 million people have been infected with the HIV virus and about 35 million people have died of HIV. Globally, 36.7 million people were living with HIV at the end of 2018. • India had 2.1 million people living with HIV at the end of 2018. • Of these, 9,100 infected were children under age 15 years.

- 10. DIAGNOSTIC EVALUATION HIV bloodtest: Diagnosis is made through a blood test that screens specifically for the virus. If the HIV virus has been found, the test result is "positive." The blood is re-tested several times before a positive result is given to the patient.
