mathematical
expression by following the
rules of PEMDAS.

And what does
PEMDAS stand for?
Parenthesis, Exponent,
Multiplication,
Division, Addition,
Subtraction.
That is correct! We solve multi
operation expression by following the
operation order of Parenthesis,
Exponent, Multiplication, Division,
Addition, and Subtraction.
Class, where do we
usually hear the
word substitution?
Sir we hear substitution
in basketball,
volleyball, etc...
And how do we
substitute in
basketball?
Sir the player is replaced
by another player.
That’s right.

When a number is substituted
or replace for the variable in a
given algebraic expression, the
expression takes a numerical
value. And finding the value is
what we call “Evaluating the
Algebraic Expression”.
Let’s do this example.

Evaluate 6x2 + 3 when
a. x = 0
b. x = -2
For letter a, how do we
evaluate?
What should we do first?
Sir we substitute the
given value of x in the
equation.
Correct. Can someone show
us how to substitute the
value of x in our equation?
Sir, we can
substitute the
value of x as
6(0)2 + 3
Very good.
Now what is the next step?
We perform the
indicated operations.
Since we got here a multi
operation equation, what
should we do?
Sir we follow the
rules of PEMDAS.
Excellent! Can someone
demonstrate
on how to apply the rules of
PEMDAS in our equation?
6x2 + 3
= 6(-2)2 + 3
= 6(4) + 3
= 24 + 3 = 27
That is correct!
Now for letter b, x = -2.
Who would like to try
following the same steps?
6x2 + 3
= 6(0)2 + 3
= 6(0) + 3
= 0 + 3 = 3
Very good.
Now class, in evaluating
algebraic expressions, what
are the steps that we need
to follow?
1. Substitute the given value to
the variable.
2. Perform the indicated
operation by
following the rules of PEMDAS.

Now that you already know how to
evaluate algebraic expressions, we
will be having a group activity. I will
divide you into two groups. Each
group will choose their leaders.
The leader will be the one who can ask
me about the activity and he is also
responsible for dividing the tasks between
the members of the group.
Each group will be given an activity
envelope where you will find the
materials for the activity and the
expressions that your group will be
going to evaluate.
