Philippians
Philippians 4:10-14 But I rejoiced in the
Lord greatly that now at last your care for
me has flourished again; though you
surely did care, but you lacked
opportunity. 11 Not that I speak in regard
to need, for I have learned in whatever
state I am, to be content: 12 I know how to
be abased, and I know how to abound.
Everywhere and in all things I have
learned both to be full and to be hungry,
both to abound and to suffer need. 13 I can
do all things through Christ who
strengthens me. 14 Nevertheless you have
done well that you shared in my distress.
INTRODUCTION
A.Paul had a special relationship with the Philippian
church.
B.Philippians 1:3-5 I thank my God upon every
remembrance of you, 4 always in every prayer of mine
making request for you all with joy, 5 for your
fellowship in the gospel from the first day until now,
C.Philippians 4:15-19 Now you Philippians know also
that in the beginning of the gospel, when I departed
from Macedonia, no church shared with me
concerning giving and receiving but you only. 16 For
even in Thessalonica you sent aid once and again for
my necessities. 17 Not that I seek the gift, but I seek
the fruit that abounds to your account. 18 Indeed I
have all and abound. I am full, having received from
Epaphroditus the things sent from you, a sweet-
smelling aroma, an acceptable sacrifice, well pleasing
to God. 19 And my God shall supply all your need
according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.
D.Paul uses the term, “all things” five times in his letter to
the Philippians.
I. ALL THINGS PERTAINING TO
OUR GOOD NATURE
A. Philippians 2:12-16 Therefore, my beloved, as
you have always obeyed, not as in my presence
only, but now much more in my absence, work
out your own salvation with fear and trembling;
13 for it is God who works in you both to will and
to do for His good pleasure. 14 Do all things
without complaining and disputing, 15 that you
may become blameless and harmless, children of
God without fault in the midst of a crooked and
perverse generation, among whom you shine as
lights in the world, 16 holding fast the word of life,
so that I may rejoice in the day of Christ that I
have not run in vain or labored in vain.
I. ALL THINGS PERTAINING TO
OUR GOOD NATURE
B.1 Corinthians 10:10-12 nor complain, as
some of them also complained, and were
destroyed by the destroyer. 11 Now all
these things happened to them as
examples, and they were written for our
admonition, upon whom the ends of the
ages have come. 12 Therefore let him who
thinks he stands take heed lest he fall.
I. ALL THINGS PERTAINING TO
OUR GOOD NATURE
C. Jude 1:14-16 Now Enoch, the seventh from
Adam, prophesied about these men also,
saying, "Behold, the Lord comes with ten
thousands of His saints, 15 to execute judgment
on all, to convict all who are ungodly among
them of all their ungodly deeds which they have
committed in an ungodly way, and of all the
harsh things which ungodly sinners have
spoken against Him." 16 These are grumblers,
complainers, walking according to their own
lusts; and they mouth great swelling words,
flattering people to gain advantage.
II. ALL THINGS PERTAINING
TO OUR SACRIFICE
A. Philippians 3:7-11 But what things were gain to me,
these I have counted loss for Christ. 8 Yet indeed I
also count all things loss for the excellence of the
knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I
have suffered the loss of all things, and count them
as rubbish, that I may gain Christ 9 and be found in
Him, not having my own righteousness, which is
from the law, but that which is through faith in
Christ, the righteousness which is from God by
faith; 10 that I may know Him and the power of His
resurrection, and the fellowship of His sufferings,
being conformed to His death, 11 if, by any means, I
may attain to the resurrection from the dead.
II. ALL THINGS PERTAINING
TO OUR SACRIFICE
B. Romans 8:18 For I consider that the sufferings of
this present time are not worthy to be compared
with the glory which shall be revealed in us.
C. 2 Corinthians 4:16-18 Therefore we do not lose
heart. Even though our outward man is perishing,
yet the inward man is being renewed day by day.
17 For our light affliction, which is but for a
moment, is working for us a far more exceeding
and eternal weight of glory, 18 while we do not
look at the things which are seen, but at the
things which are not seen. For the things which
are seen are temporary, but the things which are
not seen are eternal.
III. ALL THINGS PERTAINING
TO OUR SUBMISSION
A. Philippians 3:17-21 Brethren, join in following my
example, and note those who so walk, as you have
us for a pattern. 18 For many walk, of whom I have
told you often, and now tell you even weeping, that
they are the enemies of the cross of Christ:
19 whose end is destruction, whose god is their
belly, and whose glory is in their shame--who set
their mind on earthly things. 20 For our citizenship
is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for
the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, 21 who will
transform our lowly body that it may be conformed
to His glorious body, according to the working by
which He is able even to subdue all things to
Himself.
III. ALL THINGS PERTAINING
TO OUR SUBMISSION
B. Romans 10:3 For they being ignorant of God's
righteousness, and seeking to establish their own
righteousness, have not submitted to the righteousness
of God.
C. James 4:4-8 Adulterers and adulteresses! Do you not
know that friendship with the world is enmity with God?
Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world
makes himself an enemy of God. 5 Or do you think that
the Scripture says in vain, "The Spirit who dwells in us
yearns jealously"? 6 But He gives more grace.
Therefore He says: "God resists the proud, But gives
grace to the humble." 7 Therefore submit to God. Resist
the devil and he will flee from you. 8 Draw near to God
and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you
sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded.
IV. ALL THINGS PERTAINING
TO OUR CONTENTMENT
A.Philippians 4:10-12 But I rejoiced in the
Lord greatly that now at last your care for
me has flourished again; though you
surely did care, but you lacked
opportunity. 11 Not that I speak in regard to
need, for I have learned in whatever state I
am, to be content: 12 I know how to be
abased, and I know how to abound.
Everywhere and in all things I have learned
both to be full and to be hungry, both to
abound and to suffer need.
IV. ALL THINGS PERTAINING
TO OUR CONTENTMENT
B. 1 Timothy 6:6-10 Now godliness with
contentment is great gain. 7 For we brought
nothing into this world, and it is certain we can
carry nothing out. 8 And having food and
clothing, with these we shall be content. 9 But
those who desire to be rich fall into temptation
and a snare, and into many foolish and harmful
lusts which drown men in destruction and
perdition. 10 For the love of money is a root of all
kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from
the faith in their greediness, and pierced
themselves through with many sorrows.
IV. ALL THINGS PERTAINING
TO OUR CONTENTMENT
C.Proverbs 30:7-9 Two things I request of
You (Deprive me not before I die):
8 Remove falsehood and lies far from me;
Give me neither poverty nor riches-- Feed
me with the food allotted to me; 9 Lest I be
full and deny You, And say, "Who is the
LORD?" Or lest I be poor and steal, And
profane the name of my God.
V. ALL THINGS PERTAINING
TO OUR POWER
A. Phil 4:13 I can do all things through Christ who
strengthens me.
B. Ephesians 6:10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the
Lord and in the power of His might.
C. Ephesians 3:14-16 For this reason I bow my knees to
the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, 15 from whom
the whole family in heaven and earth is named,
16 that He would grant you, according to the riches of
His glory, to be strengthened with might through His
Spirit in the inner man,
D. Ephesians 3:20-21 Now to Him who is able to do
exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or
think, according to the power that works in us, 21 to
Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all
generations, forever and ever. Amen.
WHAT ABOUT YOU?
A.Do you do all things without
complaining and disputing?
B.Do you count all thigs as loss to gain
Christ?
C.Do you submit to God in all things?
D.Are you content in all things?
E. Can you do all things through the
power of Christ
