Vertebrates are characterized by having a highly developed brain and skeleton with bones and cartilage. They have advanced nervous and respiratory systems that allow them to live on land, in water, and in air. Vertebrates can move and are heterotrophic, relying on other organisms for food. They have protective coverings like skin, fur, feathers or scales and are only 2% of all species, though humans are among them.
