Farquhar, a Confederate soldier, is being executed by hanging from a bridge over a river. As he stands on the plank with his eyes closed, time seems to slow down and he imagines escaping his death by slipping from the noose and into the river below. He believes he has survived and is making his way downstream, but it is revealed that his escape was only an illusion and he had died from the hanging. The story explores the themes of reality versus illusion, the blurring of lines between friend and foe, and uses symbols like the driftwood and bridge to represent the connections between life and death.
